I have the Academy M-10 with a nice looking top cover for the turret area. Question, is this a field expedient applied to the vehicle or a factory installed device? If it is (as I suspect) something they applied in the field it would affect the paint color one applies.
thanks

I'd appreciate it if anyone has a photo or can direct me to a reference to find the answer to my inquiry...did they just slap the top cover on the M-10s or was it a factory kit?
thanks

Hi there
I seem to remember reading somewhere that while the top cover wasn't a factory fitted item it was fitted by one of the engineering battalions in the field. At this precise moment I can't remember where I read this though so don't take it as gospel.
Also I personally have been unable to find pics of an M10 with roof fitted, perhaps someone else can help?

DJ, the early ones were "field expedient" such as that on the M10. With the introduction of the M36, the roofs were "factory-ed".

I would certainly imagine that the field kits when painted would be a different shade of OD than the rest of vehicle.

Ken-- in your vast library do you have a photo of either the M-10 or M-36 with the top cover installed?
thanks

If you have the concord book on US Tank Destroyers it has a couple photos of it on the M10s. IIRC they where first installed in December/January of 44/45

DJ,

Found this picture at the website linked to below. I am not exactly sure what you are looking for but there are quite a few good M-10 photos there.

HTH,
Shaun

The first armored overhead covers were fitted to M10s by the 536th Ordnance Heavy Maintenance Company of the Seventh Army in early 1945.

The Armored overhead cover was fitted as standard to the M36B2 on the production line in spring of 1945.

I think adding the cover to the model will really look cool. The M10 and M36 are two great Academy kits and they offer pause from building Shermans. Anyone in for a group build?

It is of note, that the initial M36 productions were not produced with the turret roof. They were provided with only a canvas cover which was attached with clips around the turret's upper edge.

As I promised earlier Sir DJ. I hope these are beneficial to you. The first four are the M10, the next four are the M36.
If you need something else, please let me know. Enjoy.

Ken-- may I request that you post these superb shots in a gallery so we can have others take advantage of them. They are best photos I have seen on the subject. Marvelous.
thanks
