Does anybody know if the M4 composite with this type of exhust deflector was common? I have seen that type on the M4A1 76w and M4A1E8

Of all the Sherman type tanks I built the only one that I have ever received that grill was the M7 Priest. I even built the DML M4 Composite and it did not come with it. That is not to say it's not possible since it looks like just some sort of deflector, just that I have only seen it in one kit. Plus your pic is obviously a Sherman and not a Priest.

Were they common on the late M7 Priests? I wonder how hard it would be to build from scratch

It is just a simple grill, not too different that those used on heavy duty barbecues. Basically the same type affixed to the rear exhaust of the M1 Abrams series tank and does the same exact thing, It keeps the exhaust from blowing directly down and creating a cloud of dust behind the tank.

Chad:
I think these were in Italeri's Kangaroo and M32 kits, too. If you want one, I have several in the parts box and could mail you one. Drop me a PM if you're interested -- I don't have your address anymore.
Looks like these were kind of a late add-on. I can't find any pics of them on small-hatch M4s or M4A1s, but they seem to come with the later big-hatch hulls, M4 Composite included. I'd imagine they were pretty fragile, as well as a pain when getting into the rear engine access doors, so I suppose some crews "lost" them when they had a chance.
