Gday all. Wondering if there's any who can tell me how to contruct a realistic looking haystack? Could the hay be made out of hemp perhaps? Not sure to use it in a stack under a frame shelter on a farm, or if I should have my Sherm rumbling through a farm like it's invading a Monet painting?
Any help appreciated!

That doesn't sound like a bad idea for a material... Then just form your stack out of foam, paint the surface a similar base shade, and start gluing it down. In fact, you could roll it around in the material while the paint is still wet. And to make it realistic, just put little loose piles round it in certain spots, and use matt medium to hold it down. Woodland Scenics has a Harvest Gold field grass also, which you could cut up.

You could also take a trip to the local florist and get some dried variety of grasses that might work, not sure in Australia though.
Hemp would work. Also the stringy stuff on corn on the cob after you 'shuck' it. Take the green leafy stuff off and peal out the stringy stuff, dry it and cut it and that will work. I've seen it done as grass and hay,and that's all a hay stack is.

On a similar question, I mentioned that I took three colors of sewing thread that were closest to the color I wanted. Wrap the thread around two fingers over and over. Cut in two places to get the length you want. The slight difference in the thread colors, breaks up the "perfection" just enough to look real. You can hold the shape over a foam center and add a weak wash for more depth.
