what I was going to do was to place a really old elefant, hidden in some bush, and any modern German tank running next to it. and the crew of the tank is checking it out, sort of like nostalgia, I'll try to make that work.

Hmmm sounds like a challenge........ Turn it into an "artillery gun" you could hide in among some bushes with ammo boxes and stuff lying around with some guys loading shells in?

Ciao everyone,
I can suggest that you do an Italian dio. Elephants were used in Italy, and to some relative success. You could place it either in a building, on a road, hull down in a ditch, or in an open field. Place on on the one side of a rock wall. Place on in a rubble-strewn building as a rearguard. Show one abandoned by its crew (or being re-loaded). There are many distinct colors associated with the Italian campaign and many different units (Wermacht and Waffen SS). Hope it helps and if anyone needs a photoscan from a book, I have several. Hope it helps.
Ciao for now

a lot of these were knocked out at Kursk as they had no close defence on board i.e machine gun on them maybe a t-34 with either dragon/tamiya soviet figures sitting on the rear deck driving by it?

Maybe this could help. Putting some antitank soldiers next to it.

I have been thinking on a dio with a turrets less tank like the sturmgeschutz. jagdtiger or hetzer.

It would be on a road in NW Europe. And I would take the 30 cal gun loader soldier from tamiya 35086 U.S. Gun & Mortar. instead of ammo belt in the right hand he would have a sticky bomb (idea from Saving private Ryan) and place it on the road wheel. And when a track is broken on a turret less tank it can only shoot straight ahead. And then it easy for some soldiers to climb up on the tank from the sides or from the rear and open the hatches and put down their Tommy gun and fire of a round and some hand grenades.

Here is a picture ( I hope I can borrow the pic, it is from the dio Crossing the Line Kursk 1943)

Guys,

I hope I'm not a wise *** here but to prevent mistakes take a look at:

http://www.achtungpanzer.com/pz6.htm

There seems to be a lot of confusion about the elephant/ferdinand.
I recently did a dio with the 1/72 elephant of dragon. I had it driving thru a fence with soldiers running up from behind it in an assault situation. I know, not very creative, but I wanted to try out some modelling technics.
I like the idea of having it checked out by present day soldier, by dragonslain.

Cheers

Snake Eye you put out this picture

Where have you find that picture. I think it strange. It look like a German attack with two Elephant tank and what do the anti tank team do there? If the German have two Elephant tank in the attack the anti tank team is unnecessary the can’t keep up with the tank.

Just a thought.

Sherminator,
This picture is the box top of the Fujimi 1/76 Elephant.
About the anti-tank men, I just liked their poses, so decided to put the picture. I don't know if this could be right in real battle.

we must also remember that the elefant broke down a lot, and may of them were lost. also, how would these SP guns be used, like an assault gun or like an anti-tank weapon behind the lines?

Guys those pics really bring back good memories. Built the Elefant from ESCI and it dwarfed all my Allied tanks at 1:72 anyway.

Since it was a bulky tank maybe you could make a humorous dio involving the tank backing into or over a Kubelwagen or building demolishing most of it. Then have the Kubelwagen or house owner screaming blue murder:)

Since the tank was used largely in static ambush situations you could turn the tables on the ambusher instead and have the tank ambushed by a couple of Allied commandoes while everyone including the German troops are looking to the front.

Lastly, how bout the Elefant coming to a small bridge and everyone has got out and looking on as the poor driver is forced to cross the bridge.

Better stop before I get carried away. Did I mention I like the Elefant.

There is a semi-famous pic of another German big gun Hauschreck -sp?- having come down too steep a slope and burried the muzzle in the dirt at the bottom of the hill.

You could do this with your kit and have the 'driver' leaning on a shovel, with the barrel only partly dug out and an officer shouting at him to get back to work. The rest of the crew , well .. at rest and laughing.

I like the idea of size difference as well. Maybe a panzer II alongside, though I wonder if that ever happened.

I have toyed with the idea of a "Hurry up and fix it, the bad guys are coming" dio for a while, using a panther and transmission troubles. Sort of a broke down just behind the line of a broken attack, and now the enemy are successfully counterattacking idea.

Tamiya tank engine or kubelwagon mechanics slaving away and the DML SS Panzer crew member from 6014, kneeling and pointing toward the front of the tank..
Maybe some DML wounded walking back in retreat.

6025 Battle of the Hedgerows 44 has 2x walking wounded that might need some modifications for Kursk.

The 6191 achtung Jabo (uniforms might be wrong for Kursk) has worried tankers looking back/over shoulder for aircraft, a little repositioning and they're pointing at enemy tanks.

6129 Panzercrew survivors (Kursk) would be right on, minus the mp40 firing guy which would add the wrong sense of urgency.

The 6014 SS Panzer crew 44-45 might have the wrong uniforms, but the kneeling pointing guy is the one I have in mind to be 'motivating' the repair crew.
