Hey all.
I need some expertise in American SP guns.
I want to know if any can maybe give me an idea on what these 2 guns are.
I am pretty sure this is a 155mm M-40
This one here i have no idea. There was no plaque in front of these yet.
Is it a 105mm?
It looks too short for a 150mm.
Please help.
Thanks ,
Marc

Yes, the first is an M40 155mm Howitzer.
The second is an M41 155mm Howitzer, it is based on the M24 Chaffee chasis. Here is a website with more info on it. M41

Not to pick too many nits, but this is armed with a 155mm "gun" not howitzer. The proper designation is M40 155mm SPG. The second vehicle has the 155mm howitzer making it a M41 SPH.

The first is the M40 GMC - 155 mm Gun (M1 or M2) mounted on M4A3 chassis with HVSS (Replacement for the M12 GMC)
The second is the M41 HMC - 155mm Howitzer (M1) mounted on M24 chassis.
Right here goes the politically correct test.
Actually you are all both correct and incorrect.
True guns and howitzers are two different classes.
The most basic differences are:
Guns have a flatter trajectory, higher muzzle velocity and are multi-role.
Howitzers have medium or more arced trajectories, medium or lower muzzle velocity and are almost always used for indirect fire.
There are also exceptions to these rules so lets not get too technical.
Using designations such as SPG, SPH, GMC and HMC are also confusing. For example Anything with a large calibre weapon on it is referred to by:
The infantry and armour as SPG (Self Propelled Gun)
The artillery as SPH (Self Propelled Howitzer)
And usually officially designated as either HMC (Howitzer Motor Carriage) or GMC (Gun Motor Carriage).
Example:
M3 75mm GMC
M12 GMC
M40 GMC
M41 155mm HMC
M43 HMC
M7 ‘Priest’ HMC
M8 HMC
And
US M16 Multiple Gun Motor Carriage
M36 Jackson Gun Motor Carriage
Etc…etc…
Hopefully this explains it and does not step on any toes.
