I have a question on the serial number markings on the GMC 6x6 I will be using the Tamiya ones I hope Basically the first two numbers are 41,42,and 43 They also have an "s" at the end
Are those numbers correct? Usually serial numbers on U.S. vehicles denoted a vehicle type For example the number 30 meant tank, like Sherman or Stuart
I wasn't sure if the first two numbers in case of the GMC truck are all suposed to be the same or not Maybe just the first?

Chad GMC numbers always start with a 4. this denotes trucks in the 2 1/2 ton to 4 ton range.
The s at the end is a late war add on so it depends on what period of the war you wish to do.
Any of the Tamiya ones would do for a 'generic; vehicle except the HQ ones and the redball express ones.
hope this helps

Just to add to what Cliff said, the "S" suffix meant that the vehicle was equipped with radio interference suppression.
Also, some deuce-and-a-halfs that were equipped for special purposes -- like tankers, maintenance trucks and fire trucks -- had other registration number prefixes. I have a photo in an old issue of Army Motors that shows long rows of deuce-and-a-halfs, some with "4" and many others with "OO" registration numbers -- meaning they were maintenance trucks.
Here's a complete rundown (from Squadron's D-Day to Berlin by Terrence Wise):
0 -- trailers
00 -- maintenance trucks
1 -- cars and sedans
10 -- kitchen trailers
2 -- trucks to 1 ton
20 -- recce trucks and buses
3 -- medium trucks to 1 1/2 ton
30 -- tanks and some "specials"
4 -- trucks 2 1/2 ton to 4-5 tons
40 -- tracks and halftracks (except tanks)
5 -- trucks over 5 tons and prime movers
50 -- fire and crash tenders
6 -- motorcycles
60 -- armored cars and special technical vehicles
7 -- ambulances
70 -- amphibious vehicles
8 -- wheeled tractors
80 -- tankers
9 -- full- and half-tracked tractors
BTW, the "W-" at the start of some registration numbers simply means "War Department." Also, the "K" prefix was used on special purpose Signal vehicles.

Cliff and Bob
Thanks for the info As far as unit markings go,I think I'll go with the 10th armored div. 55th engineers But I'll substitute a vehicle number instead of using the HQ number that the instructions call for
