I picked up an M8A1 Cargo tactor from E.bay.
My question is what was the inital power train & track derived from the M46 or what.If one of you great folks would give me a point to start from as to a search for ref it would be most kindly.

Very old kit most recently reissued by Modelcraft. Airwaves makes (made) a photo etch set for it listed for the original Nitto release as set #35032.
If you have the Modelcraft issue, the tracks are ficticious for the vehicle. The molded on spare tracks on the roof do not match the West German Leopard style tracks that come with the kit.
It uses the engine, powertrain and the T91E3 tracks of the M41 Walker Bulldog light tank. Although it eventually looks like it ends up using HVSS Sherman tracks. The preceding information comes from the Hunnicutt Bradley book. They only have two pages on the M8A1/M8A2 and one page of technical specs.

Good luck to you. Did you know that AFV Club sells a set of M41 road wheels, sprockets, idler wheels designed for the Tamiya M41? It is the running gear that comes with their M41A3 Walker Bulldog with a few resin and mount parts to assist in making the Tamiya hull usable. Perhaps they will help you in detailing your kit.
AFV Club also makes individual tracks as well as vinyl tracks for the Bulldog. I do not know if the vinyl tracks will be the right length or even if there are enough single links in a set to work on the M8A1.
