Does anyone know of any M48A3's and/or M48A5's in California that are on display and can be photographed?

My guess would be NTC at Ft Irwin (HeavyArty should be able to nail this one, as he is stationed there), Camp San Luis Obispo ot Camp Roberts. I made a conversion to one about ten years ago, and still have it in the case. There is one in St Roberts MO, on display off the I-44 outside Ft Leonard Wood. I'll be back there in October if that might help.

Nope, no M48A3 or A5 here. We have an M48A1 or A2 (not sure which, it has a flatter rear deck, I think A2) at the front gate. Other than that, we have a bunch of M60's and M47's for some reason. No M48's.

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the info. I know Camp SLO doesn't have any but I'll give Camp Bob a try as I have a few contact phone #'s for down there. If nothing works out, I make take you up on the Ft. Leonard Wood offer.
Regards,
Chris

Thanks Gino!
Sounds like an M48A1 at the front gate(I'll have to keep that in mind for later on). I'm already well covered with M47 and M60 stuff. I'll just have to expand my search.

The only M48A3 thas I know of is at the Patton Museum at Ft Knox... It was returned to the USA fron the governemnt of Viet Nam after the thaw in relations in the mid 90's. I seem to remember that an article in Armor Magazine mentioned that it was one of maybe three or four in the US. The A3 is hard to find as most ended up as being converted into M48A5s in the late 70's... M48A5s are a bit easier to find as most went to the ARNG and seem to show up as memorial tanks front of the local VFWs
Heavy Arty,
I was looking to run into you during our "Rotation from Hell" 04-06/07... I think that we have a mutual aquaintence in Brother Thrasher... He was my FSO in Korea in 98.

Tank Rider,
Sorry I missed you out here. You are correct, Steve is a great guy. Just sent him an email the other day. Good luck in Iraq and come home safely. Have fun at JRTC too.

Gino-- the M47s and M60s are there to be towed out to Live Fire for targets. The California National Guard had M48A5s in their motor pool when I was there in '85. You might ask those guys where they put them. It is a fine tank. The M48A3 at Knox is in prisitine condition and I'll see if I have a photo to scan and send you.
Hope this helps

DJ,
I am actually talking about vehicles on display here on post. There are all sorts of range targets here, but they are all blown to hell and not really good for any referance photos. Haven't seen any M-48's left in the CAANG motor pool either. They have all M1s now.

Arty,
I agree about Steve... He started out being a pretty good rugby player as well as super Redleg. As for JRTC, not this chicken... My 7 weeks in the desert was enough. Regardlesswhat everyone says, Life be hard in the desert... It was in 94-96 when I was out there and it has not changed that much. I do have to say that the 24 Hour Shoppette is quite the freak show around 2100.

Thier is a "museum of american tanks/AFV's" in the city of Whittier, located in So.Cal. Its located off the 60 Freeway on the Rosemead off ramp, if your going westbound, make a right, going eastbound, make a left. Can not remember the name, but it has a bunch of vehicles, M-42 Duster's, Ontos, M-48's, M-47's and a bunch of other stuff. If your anywhere near, go check it out.

Thanks for the tip. I've checked their website and they don't list an A3 or A5 but that's okay as I plan on heading down there in the near future.
