Hey all! I am at the end of my Revell 1/72 M60A3 build, and I deceided I wanted to do a US marking option, but I am not too keen of having another monotone tank in my collection. So I was wondering what different paint schemes were applied to US M60A3s? Thanks!

Try this URL. There are a bunch of in the field pictures and a walk around that will give you some color patterns to work with.

In Germany, up to June 1989 (I was in the last battalion to field the M60A3TTS), we used the scheme depicted in the Tamiya M60A3 kit. We had two differences though, we did not use the sand colored areas, and the black areas were increased.

The black spots were very minimal and the majority of the tank was forest green. The brown we used was not the chocolate brown used in the NATO scheme, but more of an earth tone. It was fairly close to Testors Model Master Military Brown.

I'll have to dig through some of my old photos. I took part in REFORGER 88 Certain Challenge and the markings depicted in the kit for 2-68AR was one of my sister battalions. There was an old REFORGER book that covered this operation. I will have to check to see if I have it at home.

The only monotone M60A3 tanks in theater belonged to the Berlin Brigade's tank company (40th Armor Regiment) or to the Opposing Forces (OPFOR) that operated at the Combat Maneuver Training Center (CMTC) at Hohenfels.

I did notice that the CMTC vehicle instructions were incorrect. They show you not to add the grenade launchers. The OPFOR vehicles didn't have the smoke grenade launchers mounted, but the grenade launcher mounts were still present on the turret sides.

Additionally, there is a NATO 3-color scheme for the M60A3. The tank at the Devens National Guard compound is in this 3-color scheme.

I agree with Don, I would go for the '80's NATO 4 color MERDC camo pattern; I've found this link that shows color charts, color combo examples, and FS numbers but pictures an M113 pattern. I suppose you could apply it to an M60A3 as well...

How about the experimental digital 'Dual Tex' scheme:

May be a bit fiddly on a 1/72 though?

Thanks for all the help! That Duel Tex does look very fiddley in 1/72. That would be cool to see the 4 color pattern. I updated my email address. Thanks again guys!
