Here is a picture of two small pieces I have weathered with the vinegar/steel wool. The fence is balsa and the ladder is bass wood. It is very easy to vary the weathered look, either brush on more or less of the solution in selected areas. The fence was later oversprayed with faded white using the salt as a masking medium.
