Academy has a fully loaded M113 with .50cal turret and 2 M60s. It also has a recoiless rifle. Does anyone know if it's the same recoiless as the one in the Tamiya US Infantry Weapons set? Does it just sit on the top with the tripod?

Don't know about the Tamiya set. The Recoilless is on a pintle mount that glues to the top deck of the M113. It is the same pintle that goes on top of the tripod. See photo below from Academy website.

So they removed the starboard M60 and mounted the recoiless into the same pintle?

Alan, I beleave the recoiless rifle in the Tamiya kit is the 90mm gun. The Academy m113 has the 106mm recoiless rifle mounted on it. Much more effective on targets!

Cheers,

No, the starboard M60 is still there. The recoilless is mounted farther back on the right hull top, about halfway between the M60 mount and the rear of the hull. It is not in that picture. But, that is how the directions show it. You could basically arrange it about how ever you want. Here are a couple of photos from AFV Interiors that show a couple of different layouts.

As I said in my post, I found them at AFV Interiors here: http://afvinteriors.hobbyvista.com/ . There are more there, but the site is closing down on 31 AUG, so get them while you can.

Guess my bucket isn't going to carry a recoiless rifle

Let me check the Hunnicutt book tonight when I get home. It may have some photo's and info on the recoiless mount. If it does, I will try to scan them and then post them for you.

I don't think that your question was answered... so...

... No. The RR mount is entirely different. The M60 weighs roughly 23 pounds, the 106-mm RR must weigh about 100 lbs. In fact, the M60 'pintle' would be removed completely to get it out of the way.

Don't plan to put the gun on my 113, how well will this piece kit bash onto a M151 jeep kit by academy?

The tripod mount will fit the rear of the Academy M151A1 nicely. It looks like the same setup in the M151A1 with recoilless. I think it would work well.

As far as I remember in Hunnicut book the addition of recoilless rifle to M113 is described as a field modification made in Vietnam and not really standardized. There are no good pics of the mount there.
