Sabot mentioned in a recent post a T-92 Airborne Tank that never got off the test and evaluation phase. Does anyone has any information on this tank? I tried several sources and came up short.
thanks

The Hunnicutt Sheridan book covers the development and reason for cancellation of the T-92. Apparently the Soviets gave the NVA this nifty amphibious light tank called the PT-76.

This sent the US Army back to the drawing board to come up with an amphibious light tank of their own. The T-92 was incapable of being made amphibious so they had to start from scratch and came up with the M551 AARV Sheridan.

Only two prototype T-92s were made, one is still at Aberdeen right in front of the museum parking lot. I took some photos when I was there.

Only two kits made also. Hawk released a 1/48 or 1/40 scale one and ITC released a 1/24 scale one. I have the ITC one and it is rather cool.

Just visited the website linked above. Nice site.

DJ, if you look at the second photo, it has the original suspension. The third photo shows the second prototype where they added the idler wheel to the rear of the suspension to keep the track from throwing.

Rob- I could be way off here but the first thing I though when I viewed this T-92 was: "Wow, looks like an ONTOS...". Took a quick trip to Google & sure enough, the chassis & hull seem to line up pretty well. Any chance that one was a direct or indirect descendant of the other? The Italieri ONTOS might be a good place to start a kitbash for a 1:35 T-92 if so...

Rob-- you know I look at that proto type and see not only the Ontos, but also the Scorpion. I am looking forward to seeing it the next time I go to APG. I wonder if the Sheridan was better a deal for the Army?

Nothing like an Ontos. This thing is pretty big, it would dwarf an M113 and is closer in size to the M109 chassis minus the turret. The light tank moniker makes one think that this is smaller than it really is.

The Sheridan tried to be too many things in one vehicle so it basically failed in all. This is an interesting tank that never was.

If you want, I'll take some shots of the ITC T-92 and post it as a feature. Kind of a retro model review.

BTW Italeri didn't do an Ontos, it was Renwal and then Revell who wound up with the molds.

Somehow, whenever I direct an Idea or suggestion to Rob, I ALWAYS wind up "standing tall before the man"!
Thank you sir, may I have another! :-)
(oh,yeah, gettin my crappy revell/italieri boxart mixed up again...)
[EDIT]- would LOVE to see the 'retro-review'. Any crumbs that fall from the table of the sabot will be gratefully snapped up by THIS dog...

I took eight shots of the T-92 while in Aberdeen. I will post them with a retro review of the ITC kit. I was lucky enough to get Bobby Wong to make me some 1/25 scale duffle bags, ruck sacks and 5 gallon cans to use with this vehicle. Here's a teaser. Note that the band style tracks from the original variant have been replaced with tracks that resemble the M24 Chaffee post war tracks. I wonder what general would have had this tank as a name sake?
