Hey guys (and gals to?)
I'm looking to scratch-build an M10 turret for a planned M4A3 / M10 hybrid (if T23's carried the 76mm, as did the M10 turret, a hybrid beast is possible... even if not historically correct)
I have to measure the turret to scale up to 1/16, so I want to use the most accurate turret I can get. I need to know which of the M10 production kits is the most accurate in exterior turret dimensions, but with a max full-kit price of $35 USD.
It shouldn't be too hard to build, as its mostly assembled armor slabs, the only curves being in the mantlet and the bustle counterweights.
Ideally, a 'donor' turret would be accepted, but I'm willing to kit-trade or buy if need be. I can also buy if it can be shipped to Canada.

The 76 on a Sherman is NOT the same gun as on an M10, despite popular belief. The M10 was armed with a 3 inch anti tank gun, which, despite being more or less the same in diameter, had nothing to do with the 76mm gun on the Sherman.
Even AFV club made this mistake when making the turned brass ammo for their M10. The ammo they made is more like 76mm ammo, the 3 inch gun used shells which had a casing that was more milkbottle shaped and had better penetrative properties than the 76mm ammo.
But hey, you can still go ahead and do it, as it's just supposed to be a fun project.
General consensus seems to be that AFV club has the better turret, while Academy has the better hull. Both still have flaws though.

Ok... on the turret inadequacies, are there any references to the AFV & Academy kits?
I don't care about the interior details, its the exterior ones that matter to me.

Either I, or Romanowski, have misread your question. Like him, I first thought you were asking about the ammunition. However, after reading your post, I think what you are after is the most accurate M10 turret in terms of dimensions. If this is what you are after, both the Academy and AFV kits are reputed to have some dimensional issues. I'm nowhere near an expert here, so I don't even hazard a comment on what the particular issues are, other than parts of one is too narrow and parts of the other too wide. I do know that Legend makes a turret for the AFV kit that is supposed to be more accurate, but I can't swear to that as I know little about it. You may want to pursue some information on that aftermarket kit though, as it should come in under your price point.

Perth's site carries reviews of both the AFV Club and Academy M-10 tank destroyers.

Nice reviews... BUT...
No comment on scale accuracy of the turret shape. The only reference to accuracy was in reference to the tracks, add-on armor and ammo rounds.
I guess I'll just keep watching the for-sale ads and eBay, and hope to luck into an M10 kit, as probably any one would do.
*shrugs* Back to square one...
