I saw this on a web site and I wasn't sure what it is I know it's a type of missile but can not find a good picture of it and what it is used for. There is a kit that I found but I don't want to buy something if I don't know what it looks like or is used for.

Here's the name of the kit:

KA-61-- Lance Missile System

Thanks

Happy Modeling

Looks like a typical 1960-70s era missile, something similar to what you might see in an old Godzilla movie. It was used by our field artillery branch. Its main purpose was to just make a big blast on massed troop or armor formations or to take out enemy artillery.

It was normally transported in a tracked carrier similar to the M548 in a recent thread here. There was also a towed version. Hobby Fan did a resin one.

I'm not sure when it went out of service, sometime during the late 80-early 90s.

Here is a link to the US Army's Redstone Arsenal, AL where they develop missiles. It has a history of the Lance: http://www.redstone.army.mil/history/lance/welcome.html

Lance was a Tactical Field Artillery missile used in the 1970's and 80's. It was replaced by the MLRS system. Here is a website with lots of info on it. Lance Missile System

Deleted my post. I had the same URL up you guys do. That website's admin is going to wonder why they got more traffic today than they have in five years...

Too funny. Great minds thinking alike I guess.

I loved Redstone Arsenal and I'd go back there in a heartbeat. I still routinely visit their website. It was one of those "best kept secrets" in the Army.

I guess you could say the Lance missile is the american cousin of the SS-1 Scud.

Rob: Lance was really a "victim" (if you want to call it that) of the Army's de-nuclearization in the early 1990's. It was scheduled to be replaced by the FOTL (Follow On To Lance) which morphed into the ATACMS which never had an adaption kit nor nuclear mission.

Elad: The Lance was much higher technology than the SCUD. I'd say a comparable American system was the Corporal or Redstone.

Why is this directed towards me? Did I put out any wrong info? Just curious.

Naah, it was really a follow on to Arty's post right below it, which I thought was your post. . .

I hate this DG format - you can't tell what the hell someone is responding to, nor check what you are responding to without taking extra steps.
