For all of you who wanted to know more about the M-50 Ontos but were too afraid to ask (like what exactly is an Ontos?), here is a reference site for the interior. I dug this up a while back when I was try to rebuild my Renwal/Revell Ontos.

Rob--dear Lord, where did you dig up that antique? Having seen that monstrosity shoot several times, I can assure you that "clear your back blast area" was not only a standard tower command, but also a life saving reminder. Those six 106s would level anything they hit. Range was another problem. As I recall against armored targets they were good out to about 600 meters. Area targets were rated at 1100 meters. The back blast negated any advantage. I understand that in Vietnam, where the Marines employed them, they placed them on an LST deck and fired several of them in volleys. I do not know how many thimes they did that exercise. You have to post the pictures of your relic.

I bought the Revell reissue in 1982. It was among the kits that I rescued from my parents house when I frist moved back towards the northeast in 1999. It had been badly built and damaged while in storage in my parents' basement. Last summer before I moved to Mass, I was lucky enough to find the remnants of an original Renwal at a model show in New Jersey. It was partially assembled, but complete. I'm planning on swiping some Tamiya M113A1 parts for the interior. That's why I found the interior site. This is more of a defensive weapon system, shoot and scoot than a stand toe-to-toe fight with MBTs.

Man - I'd feel lucky if I could get my hands on a 1:35th scale Ontos. Guess I gotta drool over some pictures for awhile...

Gunnie--must Rob must have some connection to a higher being. I doubt that I have ever of a fellow who has retained and transported so many unique models. The Ontos was a Renewal (phonetic spelling) kit in a 1/43 scale as I recall. I remember that Revell did one also. The days of the Honest John.....I think I was in high school.

No, they are 1/32 scale. I have both kits and they are identical, except the Renwal kit has RENWAL #577 engraved on the floor of the lower hull. The Revell copy has it blanked out. I'll take pictures of these dionsaurs and post them today so you can see for yourselves.

I've uploaded a couple of pictures to the gallery of my old Ontoses. I have Strip-a-Kit coming so I can rebuild my old kit with parts from the semi-built Renwal one.

I built one of those about 20 years ago I think. I was young, and so was the Ontos.

Jim--I bet those picture will bring back some memories. I wonder if they ever used the SPAT in the early days. Seems to me that the 173rd Airnorne Brigade brought them to Vietnam.

I've got that SPAT too. When Revell reissued the 1/40 scale deuce, 105mm howitzer and Honest John, I grabbed those to go with my SPAT. Also picked up the T-34 reissue and still have the AVLB from the History Makers line. The thing I like about the smaller scales like 1/40 and 1/48 is that they are smaller. The Aurora and Bandai kits were also very compatable with 1/48 scale aircraft. Too bad the scale never really caught on in armor terms.

Rob---the 1/48 scale was interesting. I support your view that it is too bad that it never really caught on. Would have made the thirty moves I made a hell of a lot easier. Back to cleaning the modeling table.
