You are right, Jim must have copied and pasted the RoG description into the conclusion. Here is the proper conclusion:
Although not the best HMMWV kit ever made, the Italeri kits are the only ones readily available and except for the Avenger (still under $20), are relatively inexpensive. They look best when built buttoned up since this hides the sparse interior. Some of the criticisms of earlier Italeri HMMWV kits did not fall on deaf ears and they did make several modifications to the molds. I recommend most of the kits as fun builds that are good for the novice armor builder or a cross-over kit for the car modeler. It was a test to see if you were paying attention

My favorite one is the Special Forces Stinger Hummer, it is a neat little build. The best one they do OOTB that hides all the errors is the RoG M1038 Cargo/Troop HMMWV. The one thing to remember about these Hummers is that they are all fun to build. Want a contest winner, get the Academy kit. Want a nice looking truck on your shelf in a multitude of variants, go for the cheaper Italeri ones. The RoG kits cost me only $7 each, great deal.

I got the Academy M998 Cargo/Troop Carrier last night for my sister for $6. It has the usual pin marks but they usually get hidden after assembly. Academy provided 4 PVC tires and a cloth mesh for the hood grill. My girlfriend and I are planning to get our own kit and paint it in civilian colors like white or red

Hi firake! Welcome to Armorama.

My experience with Academy's M998 Cargo/Troop Carrier might prove helpful.

The box contains a lot of sprues since Academy added extra ones and retained most of the parts required to build the four-door version. This means that you get four doors, four seats, machine gun ring for the roof, and a machine gun. Not all of these parts are going to be used to build the Carrier so these can be transferred to the spares bin. The box also contains four vinyl(?) tires and a piece of plastic mesh for the hood grill. You can build either the Army or the Marine version.

The parts contain bits of flash which can be easily cleaned. There are some hard-to-miss sink marks on the suspension parts but a little sanding and filling will take care of them. The undercarriage is very detailed and it seems to take half the instruction manual. Other sink marks on the body are hidden by the seats and other parts so filling them is not required. The pedals are molded to the floor so you might want to remedy this. There is no engine and radiator so if you want to pose the hood open you have to look around for parts.

The lights and windshield are on separate sprues so there are no clear parts to mask while painting. The wheels can be painted without masking since they come in two parts.

Academy's Humvee is a very nice kit. I will get another one when I'm done with this. Grab one before they disappear!

Yes, it was going to be my next submission. I have all four different Academy HMMWV kits and the CMK Engine compartment for it to flesh out the article.

That's a bit of a rare beastie these days - I've only had one in my collection before - and am always looking for another - were there two of them?!? It is basic and simple to build, but a good foundation to build better details upon. You could take it really far. It doesn't stand up to the Academy M997 in direct comparison out of the box, but it's still a good place to start.

There's one problem with the Esci Humvees and that's the front hood, it's to curved (like a Beetle).
The chassis of the Esci kit is pretty nice so if you can find a spare front hood from an Italeri kit or so is't going to be alright.

I have the Ambulance version to (amongst the rest of the Esci Humvees) but I couldn't find the real vehicle so I think it's not entirely accurate.


Marcel - I've seen plenty of "Mini" when I was in the service, though not a lot were photographed. As a start, the ESCI kit is fine. A competent modeler can build a nice version if they desire. No model will ever be 100% perfect - that why we're called "model builders"...

Not really. The real reason I haven't started it is that I lent both of my M966s to a National Guard unit activated to pull guard duty. I wanted to have the real McCoy around when I did the review. Don't know what I'll do about the M997 though.

Can you use the FIM-92s and mounts to emulate the Stingers seen on some Gepard Flakpanzers? i.e. Is there enough detail and fidelity of shape there to be worth 20 bucks to rob them for another kit?
