Tank could also be the Chinese made T-59, which is a copy of the Soviet T-55. The T-55 had the bore evacuator at the muzzle end of the gun tube and there were spaces between wheels 1-2 from the front. The T-62 had the bore exvacuator about 1/3 the way down the gun tube and the spaces between the wheels 3-4-5 was greater than that of the first three sets. Vietnam had several live fire border disputes with China so I think their main arms supplier was the USSR.

during the period of the vietnam war russia was a supplier of weapons and advisiors to the North.. so chances are about 70/30 being a russian T55 as to being a chinese T59.... half of one six of another as the T59 was pretty much a copy of the T55

Good question and quiz.
At first I would say that it's a T55 because China and Vietnam did have border disputes, if I remeber correctly the border disputes took place after the war with us. Looking at the Commanders position the coupla seems to be welded on. which the Chinese did.

Speaking of T-55's, I have the Lindberg kit up for bid on ebay! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=2588&item=5918757492&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW A decent kit + some good reading material. To stay on topic, I agree with the T-55 guys.

Its a Chinese made T-59. The turret ventilator(dome shaped item in front of the commander) gives it away. The T-59 is a copy of the T-54. The ventilator is not present on a T-55.

I'm no expert on russian and russian related stuff,
but looking at the turret ventilation dome in front of the loaders hatch, I would designate it T-54 or the Chinese T-59 knock-off.....

The T-54/55 site will help familiarize the differences between the variants.

Actually its a T-54A or the Chinese version. The reason is:

1. T-54 model has a dome ventilator mounted on the top right front of the turret.

2. The bore evacuator was installed on the "A" model of the T-54.
