Just put up some photos of some M 102s. My unit was doing PT over at the OK National Guard RTI and a unit was stopped there for the night. So my habit of carrying a camera all the time worked out. Notice that they don't have the roll over bar as in the AFV kit. Also check out the tail lights mounted on the gun tube.

What's the reason for these taillights (I know they're for lighting :-) ) Are they used everywhere?

Safety reasons. The towed artillery piece is, in effect, just a trailer. The muzzle plug has a reflector too. I've got two M102s at work, both with the airdrop rollbar. I don't know anything about towed artillery though. Not my lane

Great photos, and timely! I have an M102 on the bench right now, and these will help a bunch.

Does anyone know if the airdrop bar is removed for firing, or is it permanently mounted? Artillery of any kind is pretty new to me, too. Even 22 years in the Army isn't enough to learn everything! (Plus they keep changing stuff, too... )

The rollbar on the M-102 is only used in airborne units (82nd Airborne Division in US Army) and reinforcing brigades that support them. The bar is permanaetly attached to the cradle and is not removed during firing.
Here is more info on M-102

Marcel, look in my album, you will see the S250 carrier (tan Hummer). It has the beefed up suspension and rear bumper that a prime mover HMMWV has (M1097?). It has a roof rack over the two door compartment and normally has the large rear canvas cover in place.
