Well, kinda got a problem. I almost exclusively airbrush with Tamiya acrylics because I know how to thin them and have always had good results. Problem is, none of the shops around this area carry the Navy Blue so I either need to mix my own or spray a Testors or Modelmaster Navy Blue enamel. So, here are a few questions:

1) Anybody have a good mix solution for Navy blue using any acrylic paint.

2) What thinning medium do I use to airbrush enamels.

3) Will there be a problem with airbrushing enamels over acrylics or vice versa.

Thanks.

Well, I did a little experimenting. I thinned some testors enamel 50/50 with odorless mineral spirits and it actually worked pretty good-better than I expected.

So, to further clarify my questions:

1) Anybody have a color mix for Navy Blue using Tamiya Acrylics.

2) Are there any problems with airbrushing an enamel over acrylics.

I use mostly Model Master paints and thin them with Testors airbrush thinner, because that's what they recommend. If mineral spirits work, though, go ahead and use that.

For mixing with Tamiya acrylics, maybe they'd have something here: Tamiya Paint Mix Database

Thus far, I have not had any negative experiences with spraying enamel over acrylic. I don't think I've tried acrylic over enamel, but it should work.........

Hope that helps,

Nic

Thanks for the info Nic. I had checked out that database before posting and didn't see anything. I'd rather mix my own rather than have to mail order for a bottle of paint because none of the local shops carry what I need....sheesh! LOL!

Hey Tin, are you trying to mix the Navy's WW2 non-specular blue like what was put on Corsairs? If so I have a GREAT match formula for it using tamiya acrylics. I checked it with the corsair at the air and space museum and it is right on ( it just needs to be lightened....depending on your weathering). ...Otto

COOL.... I finally get to help someone.... LOL
I used: XF8-Flat blue................... 6 parts
XF17 Sea blue..................6 parts
XF-53 Neutral gray.........At least 1 part......no more than 2 parts (depending on fading) I use an old syrenge and fill 6cc......then 6cc.....then 1 cc then mix, that way I can remix the same color if I need a little more. It also gives me a "standard" measurement of color. If you have any questions let me know. Hope this helps.....Otto
