Anybody got an idea on how to remove this chrome, or what should I do to it so I can paint it. I'm going to try to repaint it chrome, but this chrome that came on this model is flaking off, and some of the plastic color is already showing through.
Thank You in advance

I spray the sprue with fume free Easy-Off oven cleaner while it's in a big zip lock freezer bag. I let it soak overnight and use a toothbrush with dishwashing to work off the remaining chrome. Sometimes it requires a toothpick to pick the chrome out of the nooks and crannies.

Straight Ammonia works well also, just take a bottle and pour some in, or you could use a ziplock as well, put the parts in, and the ammonia will eat away at the chrome, but won't harm the plastic.

Word of warning though, use it in a well ventilated place, as ammonia will knock you out if you get a good lung full of it....nasty stuff, but it works. No scrubbing or picking, it just eats the chrome away.

Rince in clean water, prime and paint.

I just went through the same situation (only I wanted to remove the chrome from some truck wheels to paint them black) I just used "Clorox Cleanup", pretty much just bleach (just not so harsh). About 5-10min was all I needed. Just submerged the parts in the Clorox with a little bit of water added (just in case). I would test it on a spare sprue from the same model if you can, to see if the plastic reacts (i.e. gets cracked or brittle) I had no adverse effects with the parts I stripped. Worked like a charm! Good luck!

At this very moment I am stripping chrome off a highrise manifold. How? Watered down bleach.

It works.

I found some Clorox Clean Up first, Thank You Jason For the tip, so I got a small container to put it in, then tried a piece that didn't go to either of the trucks, and I figured it was going to take a while, but it started to turn just as soon as I put it in the liquid.

Then I took that out, cause it was finished within a minute, and put all the pieces in for one of the other models, and within a minute, they were done. It almost had enough strenght to do all the pieces, but I had to stop, and change the cleaner for new, to finish.

The more parts I cleaned the slower it started to work, but I finished all the parts for both models, with exhaust stacks, and front bumpers, west coast mirrors, all in less then 10 minutes, and it didn't harm the plastic one bit.

It took longer to find the small black pieces in the black plastic container, then it did, for the Clorox Clean Up to take the chrome off. Now I used it full strength.

Hope this helps someone else
