Ah, there you go, in London - that's a very old city, with old cobble stone roads. Well, maybe I did go a little overboard with them redoing it but I heard about the glass method on a program. I actually drove on roads like this in Kharkov less than a year ago, yes it makes a loud buzzing noice when you drive on it but it's pretty flat. They actually redid some of the cobble work in the center of the city, maybe that's why it was so flat.
I didn't say I didn't like the way the cobbles looked, on the contrary, I think they look fantastic but cobble stone roads are flat when they are new. When they get old, they will look like that Verlinden base, with irregularities and even grass growing between the stones.
And hey, there are different types of cobble stones!

I wouldn´t refer to todays roads and paths being cobblestones, but more as bricks or paving stones. Most modern town centres use these now, because they can be replaced when cables or pipes have to be layed, and the newly layed bricks become invisisble after a short period. (Unlike patches of new tarmac ).
Most European countries are using this system.
The whole gamla stan (old town) area of stockholm is paved with cobblestones, and I think the verlinden representation is not bad.
The ledge that Slodder pointed out can easily be disguised as a gulley or drain area ... some static grass and/or water. Would be a nice effect with some tyre tracks visible, that have just run through it.
