what i do is to paint the rust or mud color i want onto a card, then i use a sprue for an axle and roll the tire over the paint. i get different levels of color on the reads and it doesn't get packed into the tread as much.
for tracks i lay them onto the paint and press to get the paint onto the cleats and it vaires in depth between them.
just an idea i wanted to present for opinion and comment

ok i will try, should have me camera back soon, the digital one.
forgot to mention to roll the tires on a dry card after rolling them in the paint, this way you can unload any excess paint, and get your color level where you want it.
same for the tracks, and you can cut a furring strip to size to wrap the tracks around to make it easier to handle.
will do pics as soon as i can.......

As a beginner...I know, I know I got to make a start... of things wingless, this looks like a good idea.
Looking forward to the pics...
