I'm thinking of trying out acrylic paint through my airbrush. The only color I tried was red which was a disaster as I am also having the same trouble with enamel red I thought I might try a few acylic colors (specific MM Panzer yellow and OD) to counteract my mineral spirits based wash. What is good to thin this stuff with water, alcohol, combination? What is good thinner / paint ratio?

I don't bother to mix water with alcohol and just use regular water. It works good for me, although the drying time is longer than alcohol. I also use MM and Tamiya acrylics and a Poly Scale acrylic thinner. It works for MM, but it doesn't work with Tamiya, at least from my experience. I don't have a rule for thinning paint, usually it's thicker than most people use.

Steve, if it's very dry where you are (in TX I'm assuming it is) you'd probably be better off with straight water. Alcohol evaporates so quickly you may wind up with mist rather than paint on your model. I like a 1:1 mix, but I'm in the Piedmont of NC , It's kind of humid. You could also try adding a drop or 2 of clear dish soap to the mix, it helps kill the surface tension & flows the paint a bit better.
I use Testor's airbrushing Acrylics for basecoating(over primer) and these reqire little or no thinning. I also hear good things about Andrea/Vallejo Airbrush Acrylics, but haven't been able to come off the hip on the cost yet...

Hi Blaster,

I use for my airbrush just water for acrylics, no alcohol or something.
I use a 60/40 paint to thinner ratio. But you have to try it out by your self.
This is what I use, for me is this good enough.

Hello Steve:

I use MM and PolyScale acrylics exclusively and I use MM's Acrylic thinner at about a 60-40 ratio.

Robert--you don't know humid until you have spent a summer in Houston, Texas!

Thanks for input guys...I think I've got some of that thinner glad to hear it works with model master. And while not as bad as Houston, Dallas is no joy for humidity either. You have to be in that Arizonza / Nevada area to enjoy those hot humidity free areas.
