I think they are finally in! Got some cryptic email from Great Model Webstore that 2 packages are on the way. Since they are the only two items I have on backorder with them they must be the M4A1s.

Of course the big question is......is this a straight re-issue or have they up-dated it like the recent Firefly re-issue? Quess we'll have to wait and see.

UPS has it scheduled to deliver to me 10/6/04. I'll see if I can post something about it then although I have no original to compare

A review has been posted on the PMMS site. From the write-up it sounds like the kit is a straight re-pop of the original issue i.e. no upgrades.

Gents. I have a few of these kits on backorder, so if any of you guys need one, just let me know.
As far as I know this is a limited re-issue of the original M4A1 kit. I do agree that an updated version would be well-received over a reissue, but then again this kit has gone for $60+ on eBay in its original form.
Dragon also has an announced US M4A3(76)W kit coming soon. This is an addition to the Russian Lend Lease M4A2(76) the have out now
Ah.....Dragon is good this season. Almost like a continuous Oktoberfest !!!
Prost !!

While I see a subtle plug for his shop, I fail to see an off topic comment "by a big way". His plug is no more OT than someone saying Hobby Easy, Squadron, or Great Models is carrying it.
I see a comment directed at the eBay price of the kit (which is a true statement and pertaining to the kit) and that he thinks the kit will be a reissue versus a retool. Again, another pertinent statement.
The last two statements are showing his pleasure at the notion that Dragon is beginning to show a renewed interest in Shermans once again. Hey, I'm happy too.

I'm glad someone understood that exchange -- I was lost.
Gotta get a couple of these because I procrastinated the first time around and missed out.

Received my two kits today. They appear to be exact re-releases of the original.

Hi
Hmmm should I get one of these or the new Formations kit and use the AFV Club bogies/tracks etc??? Hmmmmmm Formations stuff is great. I have heard that the DML kit is not a true version used by the Brits in the sand....
Hmm buy several and stockpile them ... :-)

Well you still need to buy a donor kit before you can use the Formations set. When you are done you probably sunk about US$80-100 for a great looking kit. Don't forget the Formations is resin so it's a different building technique. The Dragon M4A1 is only $25-30 and is plastic.
Generally US troops used the M4, M4A1, M4A3 while the Brits/Allies used M4A2 and M4A4.

If you want to do a "correct" British M4A1 in North Africa, you'll probably want to get a early M4A1 with direct vision slots. Formations makes a nice kit of this; the Dragon M4A1 is a later tank and is not DV. The Brits may have had some non-DV M4A1s in North Africa, but I don't recall seeing pics of them.

I picked up my first yesterday. I have two others on order. This is a really great value, there are a ton of spare parts...
I am a little disappointed in the one piece transmission cover, there are no tow ring brackets. Have to figure out how to fix that or see if I can find pics of a later M4A1 that used the three piece tranny cover.
The box says "Early" but I am pretty sure this is a mid or late as the later bogies and one piece tranny cover is modeled. Anyone????
Regards,
Scott Gentry

Scott,
From what I understand, it is an M4A1 early (midproduction) which means periscopes vice direct-vision slots for driver and mid-production VVSS. Both 3 piece bolted transmission cover and one piece were seen on this varient.
Hope this helps,
Rob

Got around to preparing to build the Dragon M4A1. Holy smokes there are a lot of pieces and options. I usually like to spray some of the piees I think may be difficult to paint once assembly begins. There are two types of bogies (straight and upswept), two trannies (3 bolt style and cast), different rear doors and rear endgine deck. I couldn't figure out what was used and what is to be discarded so I just said to hell with it and sprayed everything!!
I'll have to inventory the remaining pieces plus my spare parts box to see what I'm short to make another Shermie!!

My M4 Early is still on it's way to me at present, but I've already got Accurate Armours British steel chevron tracks and Sherman Update set to go on it. This will give me the correct stowage box etc.
