I've recently started to use washes and have a question. I use Model Master enamels and either MM clear flat, gloss or Future to help seal the model prior to weathering.

On my current project I used MM enamels covered with Future. Can I use grumbacher oils and mineral spirits in a wash without damaging the Future or the base coat (should the Future not have covered it)?

Just wanted to avoid a really big ooops so any and all comments are welcome.

Well, I use Polly Scale paints with Future over them and then weather with oils and mineral spirits. I have not had any problems using oils over the Future.

As for me i have to say no. Once i spray on the future i wait 48 hours, then i use my oils to do the washs. I have to say that i never saturated any of my parts either. Hope this helps.

Hi Scott,

I use Grumbacher over Future.. no problem..

One thing you do need to do though is give the Future a around 3 days to Dry/Cure before doing the wash..

I actually do two coats of Future most times.. one before decals.. one after...

Good Luck!

Thanks! I did two light coats of Future about 3 days ago so everything should be good to go. Can't wait to get started!

I use MM enamels and a mineral spirits wash, so if I understand this............. putting a coat of future before I wash will help protect the original paint job from running. Never have used future but I think I will now

Hi
I'm pretty new to doing washes and using future too.
But so far on the few models I've done this, I have had no problems with Humbrol thinners or Ace thinners over completly dry future.

Cheers
Peter

Ive used white spirit/pure turps over future for doing washes and it ate into the plastic on one casing bits to fall off and another it made the plastic feel very sticky and softened some parts . but I found by using humbrol thinners over Klear (future) the plastic and paint were fine just try it on a scrap kit before doing it on your new kit

i have tryed to do this a few times,
and the mineral spirits ate though futue.
even after leting the future dry for a week.

No it will not hurt futures and is neccesary, for oil washes over enamel paint, because the mineral spirits (thinner) will harm your enamels. However, if your using accylics..Your ok, mineral spirit/oil wash will not hurt them. However, even when i do use acrylics (90%of the time) im still doing 2 coats of future to allow the wash to flow easier and seal the base coat. this is what i do for armor:

1) Paint desired final color
2) future coat #1- allow to dry 24 hours
3) future coat #2 - allow to dry 72 hours (3days)
4) Decal apply
5) Dry brush
6) Oil/mineral spirit wash burnt umber to crevices
7) 2 days dry time for wash

One more thought:

Decal setting solution WILL harm future (turns it milky colored). Microsol (or microset?, The stronger one) did that to one of my planes

Hi Propboy..

I have experienced that 'fogging/ghosting' problem with decal setting solution before.. but according to an article on Fine Scale a few months back.. I guess adding more Future after the 'decals' (I'd do the second coat before the wash), eliminates that fogging!

I just did a plane that i brushed future under where all the major decals went first. then used solveset to set the decals... did not experience any "fogging" at all.. and pretty much no silvering.. some of my best decal work.

painted with Model Master paints.. future under decals, decals. solveset.. coat of future.. let dry 2 days. light oil wash using turpenoid (oderless turpintine substitue) best plane i've made so far.
