Fnally got the crw done, built a wooden mortar ammo box, and added 2 M16A1s. Sorry about the lack of detail, using a 640k resolution digital camera and a flash.

Manchu32,
Looking good. I'd like to know more about how you went about creating your ammo crate and canisters, specifically what size tubing you used for the canisters....it really looks nice. Good work.

Looking good, but the mortar pit looks to be a bit deep.... although it's hard to see on the provided pics.
are the sights above the surface ? That is essential when using a mortar. But like I said, it's hard to see on the provided pics. I like what I see here !
Perhaps you could give the soil around the pit some extra texture.... just 2cents

Looking great Ed!! Much better this update! Nice job on the box as well as the other details. You've made a vast improvement to the kit supplied figures as well! Very nice!!
I might tend to agree with adding a little spinkle of finely sifted dirt (got any old nylon stockings hanging around? ) and diluted WG here and there. Not much, just break up the 'smoothness' a little.
Also (can I be a pain here?), I'd like to see more of an eye level (or just slightly higher) photo looking in the pit from the opening.
Keep me posted!

I used 5/32 inch Round Aluminum tubing cut a little smaller then a 1/35 scale 4.2 in round; approx. .5 inches (1.5 1/35 scale feet). I then wrapped it 2 times with scotch tape to create the illusion of the wax covering and the iner cardboard material. Used US Army desert sand with a tint of yellow for the cardboard and MM flat black for the waxpaper covering. FInally I drybrushed gloss clear over the black in the attempt to recreate the waxy shine.
THe ammo box is made out of 1/32 in. balsa wood sheet, cut to into individual pieces, super glued together, stained with miniwax colonial oak, and small pieces of scrape PE for the hinges.

you are right. The mortar sight does not extend above the pit. What I did was to use an US Army manual on the 4.2 inch mortar thaat included the measurements of the pit and the various phases of improvement. One step includes building a berm and to use ammo boxes to sight through. Also the manual mentions that the FPL is usually marked with some marker on the pit wall. That's where the white stripe comes into play.
Once the rain stops (Been raining off and on and heavy overcast since Sunday and its tuesday). WIll try and get a eye level shot within the next 2 days.

I plan to add some in my next phase of improvements. Need to find the time and the proper mind set. #:-)

I think the 4.2 looks quite grand... excellent job. But - I must admit, I've never seen a pair of green grunts keep a pit that neat and tidy!
