hi all, i am not sure whether this thread is meant to be in the figs or dioramas, anyway, i was wondering if anyone knew how to scratchbuild german mg42 ammo belts. i have few that figs are shooting, and it looks a little strange with out any ammo feeding the gun., it seems pretty slack of tamiya not to include the belts with the figs in the kits, so this is my last resort?
thnx
matt

alot of kits come with ammo belts. Tamiya makes a mg team, the mold sucks but you can still use the belts.

I have done this before... and it came out fairly well, if you have the patience.
1) buy a small brass (not copper) wire at your favorite hobby store, along with a thin strip of styrene about 1/16th wide. (plastruct or evergreen).
2) Cut this to length with wire snips. Don't worry about the marred ends, they won't show after the next step.
3) paint the tips a dark charcoal grey and allow everything to dry.
4) paint a thin layer of Modelmaster liquid glue across the plastic strip... modelmaster is an exceptionally "hot" glue that really melts plastruct strip. The first coat is to prime and soften the surface. Before this coat is dry, place another coat about an inch long.
5) using sharp-tipped curved tweezers, place the "bullets" in line along the strip of freshly glued plastruct strip. Press them in hard then repeat steps 4 & 5 until you have the desired length of belt.
6) Knowing that metal won't stay attached to the plastruct for long, come back and lay a thin layer of CA glue along the middle of the bullets.
7) After everything dries, you can spray the entire belt flat black, and before it dries, use a q-Tip to wipe the paint from the bullets. You will be left with a lenght of slightly darkened bullets in a belt!

Which part is confusing? Basically, you are positioning and pressing small sections of short copper wire into a soft piece of plastic strip, and then "sealing" the final work with CA glue to hold it in place (otherwise the copper will eventually fall out of the plastic grooves made by the glue).
Does this help at all?

If you want to save a lot of time and spend a little money, buy Dragon's Gen2 'Desperate Defense' figure set. If you really can't find a use for these excellent figs, there are two MG 34/42 ammo belts. The MG 42 is also a far better molding than Tamiya's and can be modelled with an open breech while reloading.

Wow! This sounds most useful. I'm posting a reply in order not to loose this thread. I don't know yet how to keep track of these things without replying.

Yes, off topic,
But thanx for the kind reply and useful information, Mike.
Although I've been a member since November 2004, I had not visited here very often until lately, and thus don't know my way around very well yet. But I am currently away from home for the holidays , and wanted to keep track of this info . And THAT is precisely why I posted a reply. I know now that is off topic and I'll be more careful and try to avoid posting somethig just to keep track of the information.
Thanx again for the advice and have a Happy 2006!
Martin

If this thread is so old, and not meant to be read or consulted , WHY NOT ERASE IT IN THE FIRST PLACE?

It can be read, but considering it's over a year old, and his questions were answered then, over a year ago, is there any logic in digging it up, and replying to it?

Well Dave, considering that I have not yet introduced myself, here's a little explanation of where I've been in the past few years:

I have been recovering from cancer, and I had not run into that post. I wanted to find it again and never thought it would somehow bother anyone if I posted a reply. In view of these responses, I surmise I better stick to other forums.

Martin, for starters, i was not even directing my statements at anyone in particular, for your information it wasnt infact directed at you, as you simply wanted to keep track of the thread, which i understand.
Secondly, youve quoted something Jim wrote, not I, so do not direct your opinions on THAT quote at me.
Thirdly, Biggles, thanks for that useless comment mate.
Fourthly, i wont be posting on this thread again, as im continuing exactly what i was complaining about.
Cheers
Glad to know you beat it Martin (cancer)

What was said to my buddy Dave was uncalled for. Think about it for just 1 second. How stupid is it to bring up a useless topic, such as this one by saying somthing just as useless as what you said... Now, spare me the trouble and kick your own a$$.
