Still building tank destroyers! I just finished this one. It is the Academy 1/35 M18 Hellcat. A rather small Tank destroyer compared to the M36 Jackson I built awhile back. It is a good building kit, though one has to be on there toes when fitting parts together. Dry fit first is the golden rule! But I am happy with the model, and it will look good amongst my other tank destroyers.
Please feel free to comment !

That's nice, the build looks really clean. It's nice to see something different once in a while.

nice one man.. i had a academy hellcat myself but mine doesnt look this good (had some fit problems then) love those brown (pastel?) dust too... but try putting the model on a base & dusty groundwork.. it'll look even better.. and maybe a crew figure too.
...cheers!

Very nice and restraint weathering Gary. Looks good.
With regards to the .50, the mount seems odd. Doesn't look like it would spin round, which means that the .50 can't be fired from within the ring.
Also the outlines for the tools are still visible.

Did you use the kit track's? If so, you did a good job, as the ones with mine look horrible, and if funds allow they will be replaced.

Cheers
Henk

Thanks Antonio! And your right, the .50 MG is way out of scale and will be replaced.

Hello MOJimbo! Thanks for your Complements.
I dont use pastels, I use Dull coat enamel mixed with what ever color I need for my weathering. I use this on all my armor. And I agree, The model would look good on a earth type base.

Garry

Dullcoat enamel plus another color for weathering. Give me details ...(ratios...do you airbrush or brush paint...etc)...I sure like the way yours came out. I use my highly diluted wash which is mainly black but sometimes I put a drop or two of steel and brown in it.

Hello Steve,
Thanks for the complements bud! I use several basic colors for my dullcoat wash's. For my dry dust or mud I use dark tan. For other applications I use, burnt umber, rust, black. These are always appied after all the detailing and drybrushing is done. I have no mixing ratios for you, as I mix and test as I go. once I get the right results, I keep these in old paint bottles labeled for what they are. The colors added to the clearcoat is very spars.
All of my Armor and ship models are hand brushed. The dullcoat wash is either brushed on heavy or thin, depending on what effect you want to achieve.
I try to use only the down stroke of the brush for best results, just like the real dust sags down and gathers on ledges.

HTH mate,

Garry

On a separate note to this Hellcat, what are the bits in the two bins on the front of the turret?? looks like wipers? but I have no clue. Can't be windows, has been bugging me.
For a model that has been entirely brushed, the finish is very good. Do you thin your paint, and what paint do you use?

Cheers

Howdy Henk!
The items in the turret bins are maybe range books in a billow type case. Though I dont know why range books would be needed for a tank destroyer! Now if it was an artillery piece yes, that would make sense. Some of the items that come with this kit are rather odd! The exterior paint I used was Modelmasters enamel Faded OD. All of the paints I use are Model Masters enamel. And they are thinned down to brush well.
About the questions in your other post, The MG and its mount realy do suck! Your right, with that mount the MG could not swivel! I will replace them, thanks for mentioning that.
The raised lines for the tool placment are my blunder! Next time I will sand them suckers off!
The tracks for this kit are realy sad! But I was stuck useing them, so made the best of it! I had to hand paint all the detail on, starting with steel paint, followed by a raw umber wash. Then rust, followed by a tan dust wash. And the dang tracks would not lay flat to work on, they kept curling up!
So if you can afford it, I would suggest after market tracks!

Garry

Sweet.....nice build
I have always loved this tank and you have done justice to this model.
Very interesting to hear about the washes, I would have sworn you had used pigment powders.
I need to finish my scratchbuilt 1/16 version!

One point though, and I hate to mention this, but shouldnt the gun breach be angled 90 degrees in the other direction, i.e. towards the loader?

Well spotted majorproblem. When I was looking at the turret interior, I thought something didnt appear right! Probably too late to change this now??? Maybe if the whole breach isnt too well glued in place it might be possible to pull it out and rotate it!
Below is my interior.

Overall this looks excellent. Mixing the dusting colour with the dull cote is an excellent idea and one that could mean skipping a stage of my normal system. I´ll be stealing this idea ....hope you dont mind!!!

AHHHHHHHH!! Frank, you and Carl cought me on this one! I was trying to sneak this one by. But , oh no, should have known better. The Armorama crew has eye's like eagles! I had made several attemps to correct the breach before and after assembly with no luck. I just could'nt get it to clear one of the braces. So I threw in the towel in hopes know one would notice! Yeah right! LOL!
Hey, I'll know better next time. Thanks guys for the heads up on this, and for your kind words!

Cheers,

Garry

P.S. Oh yeah, your more then welcome to borrow my dull coat idea!

LOL.....Sorry to have mentioned it....to be honest I never would have noticed if I hadnt scratchbuilt a large scale one!

Regardless yours is still a nice build.....if the 1/16 version I am doing comes out as well as yours, I'll be well happy
