Can one of our more helpful Arty types confirm that this is indeed an M114 Howitzer

Bryan is correct. It is an M14A1 155mm howitzer. Used from late WWII through early 1970s. Some were used into the '80s in Alaska and Hawaii as well.

Hmm...O.K. Gino, now I'm a bit confused. Is that a typo in your response? Bryan's reads M114, While yours reads M14A1. Is that supposed to read M114A1? And if so, is there a noticable difference between the M114 and the M114A1?

Obviously, I am a non-arty type as well...
Thanx'

Sorry, supposed to be M114A1. No noticable differences from M114 and M114A1. Some upgrades to the brake system, and some other areas. no outwardly glaring differences.

Thank You, brother Engin for the clarification, and thank you Gino for the further info. This being the case, one M114A1 walkaround coming up!

The nickname for this piece was "The Pig". Anyone who has ever had to shift the trails on this howitzer when your target wound up out of sector (this was NOT really a 6400 mil piece!) can attest to why.

Sweet, looking forward to the pics.

We trialled the M114 with an RDM 39 calibre barrel, towed by a M992 FAASV in the mid '80's. I always wanted to build that combo, but the curved, flanged muzzle brake looked too complicated
