Harrison, You can go to any craft store and buy Bass wood plaques. if you want round square or almost any other shape. You can stain them or paint them but you must seal them before you use any ground cover like Celuclay.

my rudimentary sherlock-holmes skills detect that you are planning a very nice diorama... any clues for the topic?

In the image a picture frame is used. The inside is filled with the ground works material.
If you want odd shapes - you can buy them or make them out of a piece of wood you can pick up at a DIY store.
Be sure it is thick and then stain it and seal it well so that any type of celluclay material doesn't warp it with the moisture in it.

For small dioramas I use wooden chopping boards. Very cheap and the edge is usualy nicely rounded off.

Hey, well i get what to use for the wood, but can i glue some foam to the top of it, because i am featuring a shell hole. Unless there is a way i can take a chunk out of the wood easily thats my plan. Another thing, when using plaster of paris how do i not get it all over the place, like on the wood spots that i dont want to get plastered (lol bad phrase)

Mask them with masking tape. Remove tape before plaster hardens completly to avoid the edge breaking.

Hey harrison
Check out the cheap stores. Suitable frames can be bought in an array of shapes and sizes. they dont have to be wooden either to look the part. The following oval picture frame was bought for a few dollars. I fill up the middle with white polystyrene trays ... the type meat and veg come from. this would be perfect for you to cut out a crator from. Very easy to cut and is light in weight.
All is fixed in place with a little weight and white glue. leave the glass in for strength. Then cover the top with white glue mixed with spackel so no major cracks come around. As slodder suggested ... mask the base first ... this will come in handy when painting later.
Below is a base for my M18.
And the same style again only smaller dimensions
Hope this helps some!

Picture frames is probably the easiest option, but for figures and smaller vignettes you can also use the bases from old sports trophies. I scavengened the bases from several old football (soccer for the Yanks ) trophies, or I guess you could by them from a trophy shop...

LOL SOCCER is where you hit the ball with your foot, football is where you run around tackling people. Its ok i know what you mean, but in the US we dont say soccer for football and we dont say football for soccer.
