I took everyones advice and went to my Local Micheals and picked up some pastels, but I am not sure how to use them. I thought you were supposed to use sandpaper, get the fileings, and brush them on, but when I did that, it was more like me drawing on the sand paper, what am I doing wrong? They are oil pastels if that makes any difference. Thanks.

Oil pastesl are too oily; sorry I couldn't resist. You need to get chalk pastels or a reasonable facsimile. Then when you scrape them you get powder. I use an exacto knife and scrape the side you get a lot of powder. Hope that helps

Hi!
Your mistake was the oil pastel, the correct must be dry pastel chalks, if yu buy them, then all the process going to happen smoothly...
I've been using the dry pastel chalks for a quite a lot o time, no problems registered...

I made the same mistake with my first pastel purchase. Luckily it was only one color, black. The thing is I love the way the black oil based pastel works for simulating gun powder stains on the end of barrels. Maybe dry would work better but I was pretty hapy with it and plan to use it again. Since then I picked up a few earth tone dry pastels which I will try on my bulldog when I finish it.

As the other guys said, you need to get dry or chalk pastels. Michaels' around here don't have them. Try a "real" art supply store.
I scrape the pastel sticks with an xacto knife to get the dust, then apply that to the kit with a brush.
That's how my schwimmy and Flak dios were weathered in the gallery.
Perhaps you know an aspiring artist who can use those oil pastels!
