Im not positive but most German tanks coming out of the factory were painted dark yellow, I think later in the war the started using panzer grey...and I belive real late in war, they came out primered (red brown like).. Im not real sure,,,,But like Tiger tanks base color may not be the same as a panzer IV...

early war vehicles had a base color of overall german dark Gray applied at the factory.
In 1943 the three color camouflage systes was accepted. it consisted of a new base color called dark yellow.. all vehicles weapons and equipment were to be painted in dark yellow at the factory. In addition new colors were issued for painting camouflage patterns on the equipment... olive green and red brown.
also at the same time the factorys were changed over to Dark Yellow, vehicles in the feild were slowly repainted to have a overall color of dark yellow over their orig panzer gray. but this was a slow uncertin process due to availability of paint.

It has been a long time now, but I remember reading about them priming the redbrown, and when they got in such a hurry, I don't even remember which ones it was, or what year it was, but they sent some out the tanks with the bottoms still with the primer still showing the redbrown.
They never even had time to paint the bottoms the regular yellow, or gray or what ever it was.
