Yesterday, while watching
SKY NEWS , I saw some extraordinary footage of a Marine Humvee with a 30mm Gatling mounted on the back... Now i would assume, that the gun was 'borrowed' from a Sea-Cobra and it is one of those 'ad-hoc' arrangements....
Has anyone got any pics of this 'arrangement'? Having some familiarity with a .50 mounted on a LandRover, and the problems created by weight of ammunition and the sheer rate of fire, I must admit to being a little puzzled by the practicality of this 'conversion'...Thanks, Jim

Hi Jim,
I dont think its a 30mm mini gun mate. I think its more likely a 7.62mm or a 5.56mm gun. Still a minigun mounted on a Hmmv is a great idea for a conversion. Good catch.
cheers,
Bryan

I spotted this short footage too and there was a still of it on the BBC news website yesterday. I think the footage was on Sky and the reported even mentioned that the gun had been removed from a helicopter and mounted on the Humvee - an interesting piece of Marine improvisation. I don't know much (ok, nothing) about modern stuff but the gun looked small so I guessed it was a .223 model.

Most likely a GE M-134 Electric Minigunin 7.62mm. mounted on a Hummer. The guns are forund on Special Operations Helicopters. The operator of that weapon was from some specail operations unit, I can tell by the helmet.
I like that combination.

Great catch, Matt. You are the undisputed search engine master... Snagged 2 tammy humvees at the latest Hobby Lobby sale. Maybe a conversion in the works.
Mounting a GAU-8 (30mm chain gun) on a humvee would be impressive...
Thanks for the update everyone.

Leave it to the Marines to place MAXIMUM firepower where it's needed. A mini-gun on a HMMWV - OOH RAW!
Definitely, great modeling potential in OIF. From gun truck to mini-guns on Hummers.
I too saw the TV footage, unfortunately, the cameraman didn't get any downrange footage. I would jhave liked to see the aftermath of the burst.

Oh goodie another variant for my collection. Where is this mounted, in "coupla" or out the rear? And now for the $64,000 question...whre do I get one of those miniguns? Anybody got one in their spares box?

For a real one.... contact your local GE representative (lol).. sorry could not help it.
If you pick up the MRC/Academy Blackhawk/Pavehawk kits they have a few in there with options for .50 bmgs...sooooo you could put the 50s in the chopper and leave the minis out... or the other option is an aftermarket set... I cannot remember the name but know there is a manufacturer who does make an aftermarket minigun set-may not be an exact match but fairly close-last option-scratchbuild using aluminium tubing and styrene sheet.
Hope this helps.
On the subject-I hope this will discourage any further attacks on convoys. Seriously.

I don't know if anyone has seen them, but the Marines also use a 3 barrel .50 cal mini-gun. Yes, thats right 3 rotating barrels spitting 12.7mm rounds of fury.
I've seen a few pictures of them mounted as door guns on Hueys and Jolly Green's!! The pictures were in Combat Aircraft and mentioned they were currently undergoing operational evaluation but were expected to go into full scale use.

I believe they are Force Recon Marines by their tan aviator suits. I have photos showing FR Marines in such outfits. If SFs or Army, chances are they'll be in tri-color desert BDUs.
In NAM, the two best ambush breakers according to the Navy "Brown Water" craft crews were the minigun and the automatic grenade launcher because each puts out such a tremendous amount of firepower. But that was for the jungle where chances are, the gunner doesn't see the enemy, only foilage, so an area weapon is better than a point weapon.
The Legend set is 7.62mm. I don't know of anyone that makes 5.56mm, although if one buys a 1/48 airplane with a 20mm gatling gun for the interior hatches, one can try to "fake" a 5.56mm if the sizes match up.

XM214 Microgun is the 5.56mm "brother" of the M134 7.62mm one Rate of fore is 0 to 10,000 RPM
Quoted Text
With the introduction of the 5.56mm ammo into the military service, Americans attempted to scale the the Minigun further down, resulting in the weapon, known as XM-214 Microgun. This little beast had 6 5.56mm barrels, was electrically driven and could fire up to 10 000 rounds. But the 5.56mm was way too weak for air-to-ground or ground-to-air (anti-aircraft) applications - the key niches of the modern Gatling systems. For the infantry, the Microgun had almost no use, being to heavy, complicated and with too much rate of fire and recoil (recoil force was up to 110 kg / 240 lbs at the full rate of fire). Infantry simply does not needed an extremely rate of fire to deal with the enemy infantry, and for AA use (where such high RoF makes sense), the 5.56mm (.223mm) and 7.62mm (.308) ammo is way too weak.
