Okay after building three M4 Shermans and two jeeps, my airbrush is complaining about seeing to many shades of olive drab and she wants a change. So I was thinking of a little German armor to add some color to her life. I really like the PzKpfw IV Ausf H, I've priced some kits Tamiya and Italeri. Which kits do you recommend? Of course if it's color she wants I could always build a F1 Ferrari or the Scooby Do van.

Which Italeri kit? Is it the one that builds the F1,G,H? Not really a bad kit, but the engine deck is only accurate for the G model (thought you got away from that didn't you?). The kit has some knock-out marks in awkward places, notably the back plate. The road wheel details can be a bit soft, also.
The Tamiya kit #35209 is nice. I can be built with or without zimmerit. No real outstanding problems with this one.
You may also want to look at the DML/Dragon PzIVF2. I forget the kit number. It builds into a nice Afrika Korps, or Russian front model. You'll love the DML indy link tracks.
Stay away from the Academy, a real dog

Hey tanks guys! The DML/Dragon kit sounds interesting, I've only done indy tracks once before about 5 years ago. I believe that was a Dragon kit too, I don't remember what it was but it had PE parts also, might have been a Tiger. I really know nothing about German armor but I've built afew N.A.K. vehicles about 3 years ago after I read a book on Rommel. I've always liked the PzKpfw IV, thought it was a cool looking tank, I think I built the Italeri kit back in the 70's. The one that gives you the choice of three versions, I could be wrong that was along ago. It's not Ferrari red but she'll have to like mustard yellow.

I've built the Tamiya M4A3, I am working on right now the Italeri M4A1. Nice kit but the tracks were a pain to install, on the second one I warmed it in a glass of hot water before installing, went on much easier. And last week I got the new Tamiya M4A3 kit from Great Models, lots of extra pieces and parts. (Have not started this kit) I want to do the Italeri kit again, but next time install an interior too and an aluminum barrel. This site is getting me into building kits again, any more excited and the wife will cutting my credit card into a million pieces.

Tamiya's Pzr IVs are not bad and are rather easy builds. The older kits are designed for motorization so they suffer from heavy-handed detailing necessary to have it survive battery operation. I just got the Italeri Pzr IV F1/G/H and it looks very nice. Fine detailing compared to the Tamiya kit. Haven't looked at a DML one, but it's probably graduate level with Italeri's at high school level and Tamiya's is grade school.

Ron C--did you get the 105mm M-4? I am trying to find a time to start that one. I wonder if it is a new kit or a rehash. I would appreciate any feedback if you built the 105 kit.

Well Rob, I think I'll start in grade school and work my way up the ladder. Seems like the Tamiya kits are a good starting point in my education into German armor. Let's see a couple of good reference books, paints, detail kits, the wife is going to love this. "But honey I haven't built a German tank kit yet, I need to do it right so I can show the guys at Armorama." "Armor..who? Is that a porn site? " Time to check out the web stores and make my wish list. Tanks again guys.

Does the Tamiya actually come with Zimmerit, or do you have to buy it seperate? I know a few of the Italeri kits (Tiger & Panther) are coming with sheets of Zim. I haven't built a vehicle with Zimmerit yet and would like to try one.

Cavalier sells a very thin resin zimm made for Tamiya #35209. Cavalier is available fromSquadron and several other mail order places. You can DIY with A+B putty, rolled very thin and textured with a razor saw.

Ron---I am going to work the 105 version next. I am completing the M-8 HMC with AFV track now. I used Hobbylink out of Japan to order the Tamiya kits. Very reasonable. Have you tried them? I have the M-20 en route for about $18.

The Cavalier zimmerit for Tamiya #35209 is pretty good. However is has to be trimmed to fit in some places. the good part is a replacement resin back plate and mantlet.

Rob, Verlinden makes a great interior kit for the Scooby Doo van, I think it's kit #VP-IOU1. Comes with PE Scooby snacks too!
