I have used a product called Magic water. It can be tinted with acrylics and is very easy to use. Youi can find it at

I don't know of any kind of resin that you can't easily do that with. Are you familiar with wet sanding, AKA color sanding? It will give you the polished clear finish you want and has the added bonus of keeping the dust packed down with water so that you are not breathing it.
