Question though, why are you using a Blackhawk to lift a HHMV? In other words, what is your situation and setting? Why haven't they called in a Sky Crane or something more suited to simple cargo duty?

Hi Tread

My inspiration for this idea came from a photo in the Squadron/Signal Blackhawk walkaround of a blackhawk lifting an Avenger humvee. You can also find this photo at:
http://www.sikorsky.com/details/1,,CLI1_DIV69_ETI561,00.html

If the Blackhawk was supporting a light infantry division, then as far as I can tell, it could be the only chopper in theatre capable of lifting the humvee (Please correct me if I'm wrong).

Finally the Blackhawk is the only large transport helicopter in 1/35 (says he, hoping this will change in the near future :-) ), although if I move it to 1/72, I might change the chopper (I'll probably also change the load, since I'm not sure if there's a humvee in 1/72).

Jimi, er, VooDoo,

Never doubted the Blackhawk could carry it, was just curious. Ya gotta remember, it's been a loooooooooong time since I've been active.

Tread.

Was the Skycrane still in service when the Humvee went operational?
--------------
I don't believe so....

It was, the CH-54 was being phased out right around the time the HMMWV came on-line. We had our Hummers for about a year when I attended the NCO Academy at Ft. Indiantowngap, PA, and the airfield which the Skycranes operated from was right down the road from the barracks. Kept us up half the night(s) too. Low and LOUD. During the day, the SF would jump out of the attached pods (for lack of a better term).

Oh, the dio that I'll never get around to is of the Battalion S-3 coming out of the porta-potty with some TP stuck and streaming behind on FTX.

Thanks,
Kevin Keefe

The island of Corregidor complete with it's big guns, Mile Long Barracks and General McArthur muttering his famous "I shall return" before he boards a sub to Australia.

I've thought about doing a diorama of an accident we had aboard the Constellation in 1994 off Okinawa. An F-14D Super-Tomcat from VF-2 "Bounty Hunters" had just landed and blew their main brake cylinder...

BlueBear,

Even if you don't ever build it, thanks for the story!

Must have been SOMETHING to see first hand!

Even though I don't have many speficic ideas, I would love to try a shadowbox.

When I was a kid in grade school, everytime there was a book report to do I tried to make a shoebox diorama to get out of writing!

Did some really neat ones too. Dinosaur stuff, the Monitor sinking in a storm (waves made from salt clay), and my favorite the Nautilus going under the Pole. This one was great with icebergs, etc.

Would love to do an 'adult' version of a sub going under the ice cap. This is one I think I amy actually try...

The dio that I am going to build someday will be a scale replica of the Echo Base hangar on Hoth. (from The Empire Strikes Back) It'll have the Falcon, numerous X-wings and Snowspeeders, plenty of mechanics, pilots and base personnel. :-) The only question is, what scale? 1/72? 1/48? 1/35?

OMG Yodaman, that would be about the sweetest diorama ever!

You guys have some pretty cool ideas. I just thought of one that I might want to try. Iam not exactly how long this would be because I dont know how many vechiles are usually in a Guntruck Convoy, Gunnie can you help me out?? It would be on one of the trail to a supply depot, and the front vechile will be destroyed from a RPG or landmine. all the others including Jeeps, Guntrucks, Gunjeeps, Cargo Trucks, and maybee a tank or APC iof they used them in the convoys. All the men from the jeeps, and trucks would be running for cover or firing, while the men in the guntrucks would be provifing cover fire. This idea could probabally work but most of the figures I would want to use I would have to scratchbuild, or pay $35 for 2fig. from Hobby Fan.

By the way Matt do you have any pics. of your Vietnam Diorama?

I've often thought about doing something from a Tom Clancy book, perhaps Red Storm Rising. Maybe a fleet of backfire bombers over the ocean, or a scene of many, many soviet tanks rolling across a wooded area similar to East/West Germany??? He always does his scenes so well in th ebook that it would be great to put into a diorama.

I did the same thing, I cant remember which company put out those dioramas.
Battle of Britian,Dec. 7 1941 and the Battle of Midway, if I remember correctly.
Or were yours scratchbuilt?

I've always wanted to do a diorama of a stagecoach robbery. But not being very good at converting figures, let alone having to make my own has always stopped me. Maybe some day I will try but I keep buying new kits that I want to start so ideas just get put on the back burner.

yah, I think (?) Revell , or was it Monogram?, did some paperbacked dio in a box type sets..

A friend bought the last one at Bollmiers in Belleville, Illinios. So I made do with a shoebox, cottonball clouds, sketched in skyline, and the 2 planes stuck through the back of the box..

1. British commando raid on St. Nazaire, with full-sized U-Boat pens.
2. C-47 deploying paratroopers (built like a mobile, with a large clear plastic support system with fishing wire used to support the plane and troopers in mid-air. Now, how would you do the flak... )
3. Reichstag 45'; King Tiger and other troops defending against Russian onslaught.
4. June 6, 1944 in 1/72 scale, w/scratchbuilt destroyer.
5. Allied column marching through burned out town, getting ambushed in numerous positions. A huge walk-around deal, with snipers, mg nests, and numerous AFV's, allied and axis.

These ideas with a C-47 deploying paratroopers made me think of another idea. A British Horsa glider after landing, with British airborne troops unloading. Perhaps during Operation Market Garden.......

Oh yeah. The mad max hummers he's talking about. I have 2 hummers, 1 is armed with a quad 50, and a dual M-60 up front. The other hummer is armed with a M-60 in the passenger side, 50cal up top, and a 106 mm recoilsee rifle. A few other vechiles I would want to include in this would be a Guntruck Hemmt. Huge thing covered with ammo boxes, lots of big guns. This would kinda be the same as teh Vietnam convoy diorama but taking place in the future.

Something that sounds quite impossible to do is a 1:35 C-47 unloading paratroopers, showing some ten guys out of the plane showing different phases of an opening parachute!

Oohhhh Envar.....you must have read my mind....... water drips outta' my mouth thinking of such a dio.

Next dio that I would love to build is the Landing Zone with the different stages of landing........and all of that in light of operation Market Garden....

Ohhhh mama hold me tight......I'm going wild here.........

Think shadow box and forced perspective. Have the C47 at the back (144) with the paratroopers strung out towards the viewer at a slight angle and down. Might even have the view seem like it's from a trailing C47.

This WE, I just got myself the USS Dallas VS USSR Typhoon set... You're giving me the idea of making one on the surface, after it's broken through the ice... :-)
