Hi!
I'd like to biuld GMC CCKW with wrecker as described in excellent Mr Roo's article. Unfortunately Italeri hard cab GMC seems to be OOP for a long time and appears only on auctions for crazy prices
My references are limited so I ask experts - can I use Tamiya soft cab and only rebuild cargo box? Any online photos of this vehicles?
TIA
Piotr

You could use the Tamiya kit for the project. This variations of this design has been used on different truck series up to Vietnam.

If I am not mistaken I believe ADV/Azimut,a French company, has a conversion of that out I am not sure if it is still in production though
If it is you could use the wrecker portion of it

from Sept 1943 all GMC production was the open cab as per the Tamiya GMC kit. You do however have to replace the wooden rear bed with a steel version for the wrecker version.
There are plans for this steel bed and also the wrecker set in the features area.
Also remember to mark your vehicle as a late war one and not an early war.
So there is no reason why you can't do this kit as an open cab version.

I knew that Master Roo would be in to give the info needed.

Thanks guys, I knew that's right place to look for truck experts
I have one more question - where can I find good photos of wreckers in action, any books?

OK my mistake. Most of them are in GMC 352 as the post war French army used them on short wheel base trucks.
Below are two new ones showing the recovery of a shot down Japanese plane in Darwin Australian or New Guinea about 1941-42.
pics from the Australian War Memorial data base.
enjoy
