The white markers on the fenders helped other drivers see the vehicals ahead or behind them. Grey color made the vehicals hard to see at dusk or dawn and in poor weather. Think of it as a cheap "convoy" marker.

I completely agree with Tiger101, and this is commonly forgot by many modelers...
