I just realized I've never, to the best of my knowledge or memory, seen german soldiers use sand bags. Am I way off? If they didn't, why?

I don't remember ever seeing it either, there are lots of pics of Russian tanks with logs lashed to them. I am not sure if that was for protection or possibly traction.
