Have you tried looking for a conversion kit for a more common M109 kit? Check online at various AM kit sites. Other than that, maybe a 105mm or 155mm towed howitzer. I don't know of any specific kits though.

You could put an M110 or M107 SP howitzer in its place. The M109 is readily available on eBay: M109.

Here is another one: M109A2. It's only $10.

This is a Testors boxed one from the 80s, same kit though: M109A2, and it is only $5.

Keenan, at least one of the kits in Sabot's links probably includes the parts to build both versions, but I'm not sure which. I originally bought the Testor's version when it only came with the short barrel and then later I bought an updated kit to build an -A1 and it still had the original parts for the short tube. (see the shots in my gallery).

I've got the left overs from those kits in my basement, and I'm betting I have the short tube down there somewhere. Give me a couple of days to scrounge around and see what I can find.

You can make the barrel shorter on one of the 109 or 10. Italeri makes the shorter barreled version 109G. It comes with both long and short.

I did some checking down in the basement. My original kit was the Testors #777 Kit, which was the M109, short barrel only. The other kit was the Italeri #246 which is the same one in Sabot's first link. And for sure that one has both the long and short barrel as well as the smaller travel lock used on the short tube. Since I built the longer -A1 version with that kit, those parts are still on the tree.

I don't know for sure whether they are included in either of the other two kits, (the Italeri #239 or the Testors kit) that Sabot has linked, but I would bet they are.

If worse comes to worst, and you get a kit which doesn't have the short barrel, let me know, and I'll send you the parts.

Just a point of order, the M109 as you want to build is not a tank, but a 155mm Self Propelled Howitzer, an artillery piece, not a tank. Also, there are other differences between an M109 and an M109A2. The external ones are as follows. M109 does not have the armored dome over the sight on the left, front turret roof. Also, the rear of the turret was flat, did not have the extended ammo box .

You can see the unprotected sight on the top of thathaway3's M109 below.

The Testors/Italeri M109A2/E4 kit comes with all the parts to build all versions, throug an M109A5 howitzer included in it, plus the E4 export version used by Israel. I think the M109A2 kit comes with the earlier M109 parts too.

By the way, thathaway3, I love your arty pieces, esp. the M577 FDC. They look great.

For the Israeli export version, are decal and paint scheme included?

I think it might, it has been a long time since I have built the kit in that form. Verlinden sells a dry transfer sheet that has markings for an Israeli M109A2 though, if it doesn't have them.

Thanks, Gino! Bravo Deuce was my FDC track from June of '73 through June of '74. Believe it or not, the structure for the tent extension, will actually disassemble, and can be stacked in the frame over the ramp, just like the 1:1. I've considered making a canvas "hootch" but that would hide all the stuff on the inside. I also didn't glue the roof so you can peek inside there as well.

Tom Hathaway.
