Hello all,

Here is my M16 Multiple Gun Motor Carraige that i finished a couple of weeks ago. Its the old Tamiya kit that i started over the summer and then put away, but pulled it out to finish it.
Just got a new camera for x-mas and decided to share my work with everyone. Its not weathered to much as i want to put it in a dio within a few months. So on to the pics.

Thanks for looking. Will post more pics when the dio gets underway

Matt

Edit: I tryed to fix the rex x's ,hopefully they show up now. All i am doing is copying and pasting the url from my gallery. If you still cant see them, just go into my gallery and the first 2 pics are on the 2nd page

I think the kit looks great. I have one to build myself and can't wait to do it. After looking at it in R.P. Hunnicutt's book on half tracks, I am dying to build it and Tamiya's other half tracks. Again, great job. I look forward to more pictures.

Brent- Thanks for the comments. BTW Do you happen to have the ISBN # for that book on Halftracks. I would appreciate that.

Shain- not sure about the paint chipping thing, but if your talking about the silver over the OD, its just a heavy drybrush. I toned it down a little after i took the pics but i didnt use a paint chipping technique on this one.

Again, thanks guys

The ISBN is 0-89141-742-7

The UPC Code is 780891 417422

It retails for $80.00 but you can find it on Ebay and Amazon.com for around $55.00.

It covers every version of the US Half-Track. From its original design prototypes up through Soviet use under Lend-Lease and US use in Korea.

Here are a couple of scans from the section that covers the M16 MGMC

The Hunnicutt book is a great reference book. I highly recommend it, but if the price is too high for you, try Squadron Signal's Walk Around M2/M3 Half-Track. It is only $14 and has great photos in it. I just got one a little while ago.

Matt,

There must have been a problem uploading those other two pics because the aren't in your gallery. You can probably see them on your computer becuase they are in your cache somewhere. I was going to upload them to this thread for you but they aren't there.

Now that we can see all the pics I must say it is excellent work. I was at my LHS and the M16 was one of the kits I picked up but put back. I already have 7 kits in my stash and have exceeded my limit of 5 so I am not allowed to buy until I build 3 kits.

A good start. A couple of things I noticed.

1. The road wheels on the bogie unit are rubber, you have them OD.
2. The track on the 1/1 M16 is rubber over a metal skeleton, you have highlighted the edge silver.
3. You left mold seams on the .50cals and the ammo drums.
4. Sink hole in the turret generator fuel tank should be filled.

This is a tuff kit to build as it has some nasty fit problems, which you have overcome very well. I think with just a little more TLC you will have a really nice kit.

The only thing I can see on this beautiful model (and it may still just be the angle) but the upper part of the track is not touching the alignment rollers. I know the halftrack wasn't known for its track sag, but those things weigh enough that (and from the black and white photos shown confirms this) they ought to be at least touching.

My suggestion is very easy and it comes (I think) from Sabot. Basically you add a little super glue between the track and roller and stick some kind of wedge in between the track and the sponson until the glue is hardened. This works very well and takes almost no effort.

Other than that, I can't see anything wrong. Great job.

Don't add too much glue to the top of the return roller and the track or you may melt the track. With Super glue a small dab will do.

Great job,

but two things,

1) I agree with the other guys, the tracks.
2) I see a lot of flash on the guns, I think that is not supose to be there.

These are the only things I've noticed. I can't wait to see more pics of it.

Well Done!!!

Again thanks for the pointers and comments.
I will post more photos when i fix the mentioned problems.

Great Quad! I have a question. Is the kit pretty good?

Anything to look out for? I have one that I have been meaning to build. Thanks!

The M16 kit is an oldie but goodie from the 70's. It's biggest problems are the fit between the fighting compartment and the cab. It is also a little soft on detail. Major areas are the track, drive sprocket and idler. The M45 turret also is an odd mix of WW2 and Korean varients.

Chip- John really pointed most of the problem areas that i found. The only other area I can warn you about is the figures. There typical for older figs, especially Tamiya. no much detail but there the only ones that would work in the M45 turret.

On US halftracks, there should be no track sag at all.
The suspension is configured such that constant tension must be applied across the drive sprocket otherwise forward or rearward movement will not be possible - the drive sprocket has no teeth (I believe) and relies on this constant tension and pressure between sprocket and track to allow sprocket rotation to be transmitted into track movement.
Take a gander at the idler set-up.
Even on the old Tamiya model, you can readily observe that the idler wheel is set in place on a spring tension mounting - the pressure of the idler outward against the track keeps the whole track set-up correctly tensioned, enabling the sprocket to turn the tracks.
Movement of the bogies as the halftrack crosses broken terrain is also compensated for by the idler tension spring.

R&J Enterprises do a replacement suspension set for the Tamiya halftrack series that looks heaps better than the original offering.

Sorry to differ but the drive sproket indeed does have teeth. one set right down the middle.

They're in the USA, Washington state I think (zip code looks like WA)

A visit to http://www.rjproducts.com should see you right - they seem to sell stuff right off the site.

Hope that helps.
