Look very nice my friend, I always enjoy the liad back diorama theme. Now if was to make only one suggestion it would be to dullcoat the uniforms they look a little to shiny to me, but that is only my opinion.
Excellent work.

Thanks guys,
The guys in front are Tamiyas Germans at Rest with Verlinden heads. The guy with the carrot is a kit bash of Tamiya figuers and arms and Verlinden head. The carrot is milliput.
I am a bit dissapointed with the shine, they aren't as shiney in person. I did get hasty and skip the dull coat and went right to pastels.

Scott,
Very well done, I like all the activity represented in the scene. I am curious, is the one soldier smoking offering his compatriot, obviously with a mouth full of food, a cigarette? Doesn’t he know eating and smoking do not go together very well, it gets the cigarette wet. Excellent detail with the foodstuffs and the cutlery on the mess wagon, additionally the groundwork is very convincing; it does resemble the hard pack of well-trampled soil.
Nice Job
Jay

Got to love these non-combat dios. Nice, very nice. I can almost taste the bread. Some of these shots would look even more realistic if you shoot them in black & white and give it a grainy feel.
Nice touch on the finer details on the roof with the debris.

Scott, a very well done dio indeed. I really like your work with the vehicles and buildings. I agree the figs need a flat coat, I have tried this short cut myself and it just doesnt work. there are a couple other minor points
I would like to have a word on. The pic of the guys with the smokes and bread have caught my attention. My opinion is a couple of strands of that grass are to long, also you may add some varied hieght other colored patches of grass to blend them better. I think will help with the contrast of colors. It would also be a nice addition to see a cloth laid out under the bread on the ground. The only other thing I would suggest is to change the color of the surface where your stump was cut. The raw wood seems to blend to much into the bark color. Now please just take this for what its worth just my two cents. all in all an excellent concept, layout, and detail Cheers Kevin

Excellent work Scott, nice scene and layout. The shack is cool and I like the Krupp full of goodies. Just a couple of little points that I would have done...
I would just slightly dirty up the cook's aprons just to show the poor blokes slaving over those hot stoves :-)
and something that my mother of all people point out on my dios when I show them off to my parents is the ground work is a little too neat, I would put some ruts for the Krupp and the wagon wheels, some footie prints from both human and animal.
Otherwise, well done, I really like this alot, and yes it's always cool to see some non-combat dios!

well i am happy u finally finished this one. As i told u in start i really like war - peace scenes, and i really like this dio for incorporating multiple items, like animals, buildings, human, vehicle, and all at a rest scene.
Things i would nitpick on:
well the shine of the figures, as u stated escaping the flat coat, when u use the brushes to apply the pigments or pastels the brushing movement really shines the paint from behind. I have fallen in this and i know for good!!!! And the worst is that this shine wont leave the pastel work to show !!
The cooks white dresses would surely be dirtied as hell from varioys kinds of dirt from grass and soil till Wurzel sausages and everything !!! If they would still have them !!!! I like them white as marble , but i dont think that they would clean them every now an d then !!!
The guy that is smoking is offering a cigarette to the guy that is eating and already cutting the next slice of bread..hmmm i dont think that he ll prefer the cigarette !!!
I have a fear that the ground work , appears a bit flat and "untextured", meaning that if thats soil it would have been some digged from all this traffic (korses , feet, wheels ) so it would be more rough and rich if u know what i mean .
In all i like the fact that different items are nicely blended in there and the scene is different from the usual. Nice setup and planning of the dio and thew final picture is nice. One more good work there.
Silly question: What kit are the horses from ? cause i am also seeking 2 of them for my big russian and dont have them .

I agree with the comments already posted, but you have really done a good job on this. I always look for the fine detail on diorama's as it's a good indication that the modeller has really thought out the subject and composition - and this has detail in bucket-loads - the guy with his cheek bulged with food, the soldier feeing the horse etc.

hi Scott,
a very good subject for a diorama. figures are very good, especially old tamiya resting figures look very good with new heads.details like carrot, cigarette and food in ladle are very good details.IMHO some wheel and foot prints could be good on the ground.
congrats and happy new year.

Nice one, I like it. It takes you away from the stressful medium of the war and places in a more relaxed mood.
It may be and most possibly because of the harsh flashlight, but the figures look a little like semi-gloss to me, other than that the figures are very nice.
Regards.
Cagin.

Great comments guys - I went to bed last night thinking of ways to get a dull coat on the figures
I'm just going to have to do as Nike says "Just do it".
The aprons - they're getting dirty this weekend, nice thought, thanks.
As far as the ground work goes - I deliberately went for a smooth well worn hard packed area. There is a "main ridge" down the road center hidden by the Krupp. Out side of that I made the concious decision to keep it smooth.
M_G - the brown horse is from Tamiya's Mounted Infantry set (not sure of the specific name). It's the older one with two German infantry/MPs. One guy is standing the the other is on the horse. I just left the sadle off. The mustard horse if a Dragon horse that was graciously donated to me, not sure of the set. This one had a molded on sadle that I had to grind off.
The guy eating on the boxes might just be getting sick because his mate is offering him a cigg. to early
:-)

I agree with all those who replied to this before me, a really nice subject, well executed.. I was going to mention the aprons and one other thing I spotted, the cook with the ladel giving out the food.. he would have a vessel or pan from which he would dispense the food.. as it is, he would have walked from the 'Goulashkannone' to where he is now with a full ladel, only to have to walk all the way back to get the next spoonfull
Other than that, as was said before, it's the wealth of detail that makes this dio.
Cheers
Henk

Don't worry about the guy eating and smoking at the same time Scott! My Mom (RIP, love ya Ma!) used to do it all the time, really torqued me too!! Of course, smoking killed her but hey, those guys are at war!! Gotta smoke em' if ya got em'!!

Hello Slodder, great work !
You've done a great scene here, with plenty of interest and life in it !
There's just one detail that bothers me : the dark yellow panzerschrek (is that one?)
Isn't that kind of weapon from the end of the war ?
Your vehicles are grey so they are rather from early in the war...
So to me they don't stick well together...
Sorry to bother you with such a minor detail. I'm just looking at such minor details because I like your scene so much !

Wow, looks like early morning or late afternoon... I love photography with natural light, and this applies to models, too.
I already said what I think about the diorama itself.
Cheers again!

Great work! Tons to look at in this one, and I like all the little details,, bottles, utensils, food. I like the roadway too.. not heavily rutted like in the wet season, but a few light ruts and some stones showing.. looks like hardpan dirt in the hot summer.
Tree foliage looks good, i'm guessing spices for leaves? Nice blend - my spice work always seems too uniform. Gonna search the gallery and hope to see a pic of the interior of the structure. Thanks for pics!!
