Im building a dio of an area 51 hanger during testing of the F-117.

Problem, I have this huge hanger with concrete floors and nothing on the walls except an American flag.

What kind of things would hang on the walls of an area 51 hanger?

I have thought about world maps or possibly a skunk works emblem or a strategic air command symbol.

Problem is that I dont know what actual division it is that tests planes at area 51.

any ideas

This screams Imagination all over it!!!

How about some of the typical stuff...safety posters, eyewash station, fire extinguisher, shadow board, personnel roster, racy posters, calendar...

sorry. should of imaged them.

Anyway, my dio is 1/48. If I printed these off of the internet and made them as close to scale as possible with them still legible would they look silly.

How many safety poster would be 10-15 feet tall (scale)?

The hanger is really large though so there are plenty of room. I just want it to look fairly realistic.

I did a google search for photos of aircraft hangers and looked at a lot of photos (most not relevent to your question)

The correct answer is there should be nothing on the walls.

A couple of the pictures did show very large "no smoking" signs (black lettering on red background) but that was all.

I don't know about 1/48, but in 1/72 Hasegawa does external power carts, tractors, crew vans, maintenance lifts and handling equipment. That ought to full up a little space.
From the scratchbuilt side, tool chests, storage cabinets, sign in stations..would all belong.

.

Test it. Download them to a folder them import them to Word as clipart and resize. Click File/print then go to properties and choose the best qualities and print. You'll know if they'll work. Even if they're not legible, they'll be visible.

If your building a hangar like the ones during testing, youd be better off looking up Tonapah test range, thats where operational testing occured. Interesting fact: Did you know the prototype first flew in 1979?

being in the Air Force, I really do not see alot of stuff on the walls in a hanger, the only posters would be in a hallway. We do have a big flag on the wall, Also a large painting of our squadron patch. We have alot of other stuff in the hanger, like ISU90's and stuff of that sort. There are al least 6 to 10 of them along the sides of the hanger, make sure you have a drain in the hanger somewhere, it usually runs the whole length of the hanger.

We always have the top two in our hangers.

Herky

Also maybe a big POW/MIA flag would be cool

thanks!!

The concrete was poured today. It looks terrible. It still has to be extended to the edge and sanded, colored etc.

I am also going to touch up the walls and ceilings when finished.

I just shoved a 1/48 f-14 in there for scale...there will be a camo'd f-117 when finished.

The hanger will be underground with satelitte dishes on top and an exit tunnel on the right side of the dio.

The overhead door doesnt go anywhere...I just wanted it to look like it went on into another underground bunker.

It looks really, really rough right now but I promise it will look alot better next time you see it.

thanks for looking.

oh, the lights...the lights are big christmas tree lights.

When the hanger is completed it will have a front lip that comes down that should cover them up. Not exactly to scale...they are bigger than the soldiers!! :-) :-) :-) It looks awesome though when the lights are off and the only light is coming from the hanger and that offshoot tunnel.

It needs to have the stuff associated with normal hangar usage such as aircon ducts and hanger heaters (especially if this one is set in a mountain or underground), fumes extractors, fire suppression systems, overhead cranes, built in ground power stations, hydraulic rigs and other equipment stored and not necessarily in use, servicing platforms, workbenches, equipment lockers and often in USAF hangars on the wall is a painted slogan usually about FOD (foreign object damage) such as "FOD is everyones responsibility".

Hope this is useful.

great models have 1/48 prints for airfields from verlinden and other gear like drums and crates. Just go to the category section and then to Scale Diorama/Diorama Accessories 1/48
