Anyone have any interesting camo schemes for the 251 that participated in the Battle of the Bulge? It does not matter to me if it is Wehrmacht or SS. Thanks

During the Ardennes, 251's could appear as overall dark yellow with only markings and numbers - these would be hot off the assembly line with no time to camo paint. Ones with more use could have 2-color, or even 3-color camo jobs in hard- or soft-edged patterns. You could even apply a patchy snow camo over the previous pattern. There is a very rare photo of a 251 in 'ambush' camo. Research the division you want to portray and see where it saw action prior to the Ardennes. This might give you some indication of the camo pattern it would have.

Hey guys im glad youve decided to talk about the 2nd SS Das Reich becuase i am doing a dio of them in breakout from Ukrain to get back behind friendly lines to be shipped to be refitted. (info from "the bear")
Also, i have the squadron book on german camo and i found that in that book it shows that germans used mud alot more frequently than paint. You will see in halftracks, a whitewash brushed on really sloppily in a crosshatching pattern(only the big tanks got a good overall coverage of white) and usually ontop of this they smeared mud on the vehicle to further camo it. Maybe you could add some evergreen or pine boughs ontop of that.
Hope this helps....depending on what phase of the bulge you are depicting. This is obviously not much help if you are depicting the part of the campaign where snow was not on the ground yet

The ambush 251 pic was either in the Squadron/Signal on the 251 series, or in one of the Panzer Colors books. It was a right side profile shot in a bushy area. Don't know where though.

Thanks a lot guys, I have the Osprey Book on how to model the 251, so I will use that and the internet to complete it. I want to have it with a light layer of snow on it, so that will definetly be included.

I'm working on my "Ardennes" Campaign project (includes a Panther "G" of 1 SS with Kampfgruppe Peiper) and have been using Osprey's "Ardennes 1944; Peiper and Skorzeny" as much of my reference. They show a SdKfz 251/3 Ausf. D, SS-Panzergrenadier-Regt 2 painted in standard three-colour camouflage and "liberally camouflaged' with foliage. Also a couple of 250s with the factory dark yellow only and much foliage. These are 1 SS rather than 2 SS but as Biggles2 pointed out, these would work for either. Hope this helps some. Sorry I don't have a link to this book.

That surely does help Blade! "Liberally Camoflaged" is exactly what I am looking for.
