Hi guys. I'm currently working on a coat of zimmerit for my panther and was wondering if the zimmerit would also be found on the lower hull behind the running gear. With all my reference photos I can't seem to come up with a definate answer.

Any suggestions?

If you mean where the exhaust pipes are and stuff, yes.

If you are talking about the lower hull, behind the running gear, I have seen pictures of it both with and without it.

Yes Oldbean, lower hull behind the road wheels and treads. So far I agree with you, it seems that some had it and some didn't. I'm wondering if there were some versions with it or without.

Monte,

Yes, I saw some pics a long time ago where some Panthers have zimmerits behind running gears. Regarding the type, I guess it would be safe to use the same pattern you used on the turret and hull. If you like it the easy way, probably you could just apply the vertical ridged pattern...

Cheers

Thanks Warthog.

I understand that the zimmerit pattern is going to match top to bottom. What I meant is will the zimmerit on the lower hull be more likely on a Panther A, G, or D? Early, mid, late etc.?

Thanks for the imput guys!

Oh ok, as mentioned by others some have and some don't have zimms behind the running...regardless of Panther version.

Some zimmerits were factory applied and I guess those w/o zimms behind running gears were applied on the field (it would be hard to apply zimms with the roadwheels already attached). BTW, if I recall correctly, German AFV manuffactured by September 1944 do not have zimmerits....

Hope this helps

Someone posted pics somewhere on the too-many armor DGs I visit of a Panther resto, and yes, zimm behind the suspension.
Man were those Whermacht wienies a paranoid bunch or what?

Anyway, here is a nice site with several Panther zimm pics.

Monte,
one of the other site members, Dargonwagon was good enough to take some pics of a restored panther near his home
here a pic of just what you were looking for

as for what had zimm, early d's/late G's never had it ]fitted unless the early d went back for a re-build best bet would be to cheak your ref's as no doubt some one will tell me I'm wrong

Thanks guys for the help!

I guess I'll just see if I get "inspiration" to add the zimmerit on the lower hull.
