I bought two Skybow M38A1 kits from Accurate Armour (they have all Skybow kits on sale now) and as I generally don't build models of stuff older then Vietnam War, I obviously want to build these two Jeeps in Nam era markings. I however have problems finding any photos of them in Vietnam. I managed to find only a couple of not very clear pictures...

Can anyone help me, please?

That would be great Dave! I wouldn't mind to build one of my jeeps in your unit markings

But I also want to build one of them as USMC jeep. I believe Marines used more M38A1s in Vietnam than Army. Do you know if Marines had their softskins painted in the same green color as their tanks, or were their jeeps in standard OD as Army vehicles?

Pawel I am not sure if the color was different than the Army. I never saw the Marines use these jeeps. The ARVN's used them in the towns around Tay Hinh and on Hwy 1 in the south. We had four of them that we used as the Commanders jeep, the Motor Sgt had one and we used two as convoy escort vehicles before we got the Gun Trucks in our region. I am still looking for the photos. I have been busy here with teh In-laws, but I haven't forgot you. Will be busy today too (my birthday)

From what i can find, the m38's were used very early in the war. Info and pics of them are in short supply...there's alot of jeep restoration sites that have wonderfully restored versions out there...google search for them comes up with a few hits. Other than thaat, all my books are of the later versions.

Sorry, goodluck

Hi Pawel,
I'd just found only a pic of M38A1 in Nam (a Mitsubishi CJ-3 between 2 M38A1) :

About the M38A1 painting scheme, this original Willys MD was in OD but I am not sure that it was painted in the same color as the Marines M48A3 in Nam. You may ask our other mate.

Happy Birthday Dave!

I have one picture of Marine M38A1 in Nam, so they definitely used them and I've read somewhere that they had more of these jeeps in SEA during Vietnam war than Army, but I'm not sure if it's true.

Did you have any M38A1C (with 106mm RR) in your unit? I remember that you mentioned in one other thread recently that you did, but could you confirm?

If you can't find any pics it is not a big problem. All I would need is a description of markings you had on those jeeps and I'll do my best to recreate them

No we did not have them. The Marines I have been told had them in the early days of the war. I believe it was in 1965/66 time frame. I did see one on an M-38 just outside Tay Ninh. I can't remember the unit it was assigned to. We passed it along the side of the road on convoy.

I have searched through all my photos and I could not find a single photo of the M-38's I know that I have some but for the life of me I can not seem to remember where they are. I am posting a lot of photos in my gallery under the title of Moments in Nam. It will have a lot of photos of some of the convoys and the places we passed through. I found one photo of the truck that I lost just after Tet 68 (got a free ride to Yakota AB hospital out of this one). There are a lot of pics that could give some of you guys some ideas for dio's or builds.

After looking every where that I could think of I came across this site with the help of a friend. The M-38's were primarily used by the US Marines and the US Air Force. Like I said we had four of them in my unit for a while. The Us Army was not authorized their use after 1967 so that is why we had to turn our units in. My friend and fellow historian on military vehicles in Nam, James Lyles(Hard Ride) have been researching this for you. I have contacted the military Historian at the Transportation Museum t Ft. Eustis for assistance and am waiting for a reply. In the mean time I have this URL of a place that has examples of the Vietnam era vehicles. I hope that this will help. It is very possible that the US Marines had the M-38's with the 106 RR on them. They had the M-151s with them so I cannot see why they would not have the M-38' s so equipped in the early years of the involvement. http://www.militaryvehicles.com/vehicle_31.shtml

Wow, Dave... Many thanks for doing all this! I managed to find a few more photos myself, but not many. I think I will build RR variant in USMC markings and unarmed jeep in Army markings. What bumper numbers would a jeep from your unit have? Any special markings? The top of white star on the hood would be pointing towards the front or to the back? I know that on your M151s you had stars pointing to the front, but I have found photos of Army M38A1 with stars painted both ways.

Would it be correct to attach M416 trailer like the one below to the Army M38A1 Jeep? Would it have any "bumper numbers" on it, or just US Army registration number? I have one such trailer from old Tamiya M151A2 kit and I wonder if I can use it with m38A1.

Cheers,

I wish that I could have found more. The Star is with the point facing front as is on the trucks and M-151's. You can use the trailers as we did in my unit. The numbers on the trailers were the same as the vehicle that they were assigned to.

The bumper numbers on the front and back were:

1SGP 86SBN Hq 3 with a small white star in the center of the front bumper. The rear bumperettes were the same as the front. The Commanders jeep was Hq 1 and it had a white cover over the the spare tire wheel. It had the Signal corps crossed flags and 86 Sig Bn over the top and Cu
Chi on the bottom. The commanders jeep was also a gloss OD. The wheels had a thin white line on the tire edge to outline the rims. Also the center hubs were painted white. The lug nuts were painted signal orange (Orange and white are the official Signals colors)

Thanks again Dave!

Gloss OD?... White trims?... I think I'll pass this one - not exactly my idea of military jeep

So it will be HQ-3!
I will convert the trailer to M100 (round fenders and some other minor changes), as it seems likely that you had them for M38A1. M416 trailers were designed for M151 (wider wheel track) and I've found several pictures from Nam of M151s towing M100, but never a picture of M38A1 towing a M416, so I assume M100 were still more common early in the war. Also as I will have M416A1 attached to one of my M151A2s, I would like to make the trailer for M38A1 look noticeably different.
