I recently did a couple of carriers as commissions for customers, and ended up with a few left over planes in 1/350 scale, which started me thinking about a dio project...so this is what ended up happening.
The B-25s and F4Us are Trumpeter, the Betty is Tamiya (pushed back off the runway by the SeaBees who are out working on the groundwork for a new diorama), and the PBY was scratchbuilt. I had originally wanted an Iron Shipwrights Martin PBM Mariner (cooler looking), but the kit was so badly warped I couldn't use it.
Quonset huts are scratchbuilt, as are some of the vehicles, others are 1/350 Tom's Modelworks trucks.
Although you can't see it, I removed the engine cowling on the PBY, and there's a ground crew servicing the engine, complete with photoetched motor mount. The scaffolding was made from a 1/350 ship searchlight platform. Palm trees were made with floral wire, and the funny green paper that comes with Tamiya's dinosaur kits (swiped from my daughter's T-rex kit).
The base is 5" x 7", an old 3rd place trophy base. Hope you like it. I do have some in-progress photos if you care to see more...Jeff

One thing is certain:
- this is the best recycling I had ever seen of a trophy base!
A little gem!!

Thanks Chris. I am a true Renaissance modeler...I build whatever suits my fancy at that particular moment in time, and I don't stick to one particular type or scale.
At one point, it was 1/72 WW2, and nothing else...needless to say, 850 or so kits later, it got boring.
I'm usually more interested in the subject matter than I am in the scale...in some instances, it's just a matter of building something that's tangible, like, 120mm figures instead of 54mm, which is too small for me personally.
All in all, I think it makes things more entertaining for me. I try not to get pigeon-holed into one type of model for any length of time. I build in phases...right now, I'm exiting my 120mm figure phase and entering a 1/32 plane phase...after that, who knows...
Best,
Jeff

That is a great diorama, lots of detail at a very small scale - wonderfully done.

Great job. I defy anybody, not knowing what scale that was done in, to tell it was so small. I can't imagine putting the out of box planes together, let along scratch building a PBY, including an exposed ENGINE. The mind boggles.

Hey Shain,
IT IS DONE!!!
Once my vision started getting blurry from putting the plug wires on the engine on the PBY, I decided enough was enough.
Actually, it was rigged with lycra thread from White Ensign, great stuff, and in scale...even in /1350.

Wow, what those leftovers can do... Good work with those "I will not use them" pieces, exposed engine, good groundwork and trees and so on. I love it!
Cheers!
