I'm expecting my DML T-80UD to arrive any day now, and while I'm full weight into my E100 build, I wanted to start researching this kit, touching base with those who may have already built it and are aware of the kit's pitfalls. I note that SP Designs has "T-80 Correct Outer and Inner Roadwheels (DML)" as well as "T-80UD Tracks and Sprockets" (though says nothing about DML specific). I read somewhere that the DML T-72 has a historic problem where they top run of tracks had to be removed in order to get the hull to fit. Does the T-80UD have that issue? Any other note of pitfalls would be appreciated. Thanks.

I've got one weighting to be painted and I still have to do the tracks.
There is a problem with the fit of the tracks and the drive sprocket ( still have the problem) but all in all it is nice kit.
You do have make the wireng for the smoke granade launchers but you can copy the lay-out from the instruction sheet.

I read here and there that tthis kit has a major problem with the engine deck which would not be correct for a UD version. I haven't checked on my own.
Another trouble, as for the whole DML T72-T80 series, is the oversized 2A46 barrel which makes the tube far larger than the 125mm it is expected to be. You'll need replacement barrel, not too difficult to find though. Eduard's barrel is too short by 7mm or so.

Hope this helps

Is it a barrel length or diameter issue?

Both the diameter is to wide and the length can be questioned also!If the barrel was to scale it would appear to be 140-150mm!!!that would be some firepower!!!!

Any ideas who makes an after market barrel? Don't recall seeing one for the T-80 in my barrel searches for various other tanks...though maybe I just didn't see it...

Okay...

First, go here:

http://members.tripod.com/mmfs0/reviews/t80/index.htm

As for a barrel, Model Point make a very nice, but a bit spendy, one. I think Barrel Depot may have one now as well.

As noted in the article above, the SKIF T-80UD has a problem with the rear deck. THe DML kit is ok. The DML kit has a problem with the tracks and roadwheels, but the SP Designs parts will fix this. ...ok, this is all basically a recap of the article above that I wrote.

I will be doing a souped up build of the T-80UD for the Seeing Red campaign, so I will try to doa good job making notes and taking pictures. I am looking over Guntruck's technique to to this, hope it comes out as well...

Any other questions?

I'm sure I'll have many! I did find a reasonably priced barrel here:

125mm barrel for T-64, T-72, T-80

These guys are local to me so probably my best bet.

What is the primary difference between these two barrels? Any:

Model Point's T-64/T-72/T-80/T-80UD/T-85 125mm jacketed barrel MP3517

and

Model Point's T-72B 125mm 2A46M jacketed barrel MP3517C

Both claim to be 2A46M barrels. It's just that one is in stock (T-72B) and the other isn't. This would be a replacement barrel for my DML T-80UD.

In case you haven't seen it yet, Modelpoint U.S. is importing a new range, called MiniArm and they have a fair few bits n' pieces for the T-80. You can see it here:..Jim

The T-72B has a different style thermal sleeve around the same gun.
