what i do to get mud is. i take some grout, ya know the stuff used between the joints in tile. i mix in some earthbrown paint, and static grass. then i roll the model through it. or place with an old brush. seems to work pretty good.
when its dried it looks like older dried mud. but looks good.

I use plaster of paris and it works fine if you are looking to create heavy lumpy or caked on mud. Just remember to add some paint or dye into the mix so it isn't pure white. I usually mix in some static grass and Italian spices to give it some texture.

If it's just light mud or heavy dirt you might be better off with paint pigments.

I use fast n final light spackling, diluted with water. It dries quick, brushes on great and takes paint well. Mix in a little static grass and you are good to go!

Ciao Frank,
Spackle comes in small tubes or tubs and you use it to fill holes in walls.
Ciao for now

Hi,

I use real earth mixed with some spackle and dilluted PVA glue. Sometimes I add to the mixture some flat earth pigments...

Hope this helps

This is spackle, in particular, the one I use.

Any hardware store carries it, or if you don't have a hardware store close, you can buy it online. Just type in Dap fast n final.

Ola Francois

A little note when using Spackle.. When your base is made out of Styrofoam.. or anyoother foamlike stuff make sure the Spackle or plaster is on Acrylic base.. In all the other spackle stuff are things that melt the foam of the groundworks but that is more for dio stuff... However I have noted that some spackle even can make the plastic soft....

I think a thin layer like mud would not do much harm but you can`t be too carefull

Francois, if you're leaning more towards very light mud, I have recently seen a model where a layer of textured Mr. Surfacer was used on the inside of the mudguards on vehicles, which was then obviously painted a 'mud' colour. I've never thought of doing this myself, but I intend to on the next model I complete. One only has to look under the wheel arches of a modern road vehicle to see what the effect should be!
