Here's my latest kit in progress. The 1:72 jumbo kit by extratech.
The turret is almost ready. it just needs some casting texturing and a weld seam between the upper and lower turret halves. I added lifting eyes and the mounting hardware for the search light from copper wire. I noticed that the search light should be on the right side rather thatn left but after I had glued the wire in place. I just left it that way as I could have broken the delicate part. I also had to trim the turret front as it had a protruding "lip" which causes the matlet to sit too much out of the turret if left in place. After shaving the extra styrene off the mantlet and it's mounting hardware fit exactly to the turret front. I also drilled out the gun barrel.
here's a shot of the upper hull where I added weld seams after reading an article about it here in armorama. I stretched the sprue as thin as I was able but the seams are still a little overscale.
What do you think? Anything serious missing or something to add?
Btw, did all jumbo shermans have the .50 cal MG travel mounts installed? I.E. can I leave them off? These parts in the kit are quite poor and don't fit at all

I've got Extratechs M36 on order, what are they like as kits?
Nice going on the extra detail on your jumbo BTW.

Extratech's sherman-based kits are very nice kits. Great fit and plenty off detail.
There's some things you have to be careful with. Be sure to align the sprocket teeth. Fit them to a piece of track as you glue the sprockets together. Also be sure to have the sprockets stand out of the transmission cover enough for the tracks to fit correctly. It's best to start track assembly with the sprocket. Attach six links to the sprocket and five to the idlers. Then it's easy to build the rest of the tracks. I had to remove one link form the bottom lenghts and replace it with a sinlge link to get a nice curve around the last wheels. Also remember to attach idlers with wire as the joint is otherwise very flimsy (I broke the idlers off my M10 a couple of times). Drill holes and glue with superglue, or maybe epoxy, as you need to get the tracks fit right. It seems that CA sticks to copper wire almost instantly. Or is it just my imagination?
One more thing about suspension. Assemble the suspension bogies but leave the suspension arms un-glued. Then attach the bogies to the hull and then use some liquid cement to hold the suspension arms in place. I didn't do this and had to sand the wheels a little to get all wheel to touch the ground.
I'll post more pics when when I'm done with assembly.

Oops, I forgot something. Extratech shermies have all tools as separate parts but they lack tie-downs, but they're easy to make from scrap PE.
Now I'm working with the turret and the AA .50-cal. I made a barrel changing handle from thin wire (which is still too big and thick). The supplied PE-part was just supposed to be glued underneath the barrel. The kit mg also lacks an ammo box so I made one myself from sheet styrene, streched sprue and masking tape for the belt.
I'll post pics when I'm done with the turret and mg.
Btw. does anyone have any idea how to scratch-build the periscope guards? I wouldn't like to buy a whole PE-set just to use two or three parts. Wire could be fine, but how to glue such parts together? Styrene could do, but cement could just melt them away. Any ideas?

Here are some more photos of my shermie in progress:
A shot of the rear suspension and idler wheel with copper wire inserted for mounting. The wheels are inaccurate as the don't have a rim. The kit also comes with accurate (rimmed) non-spoked wheels from the M10/Achilles kits. I don't know if they can be used with jumbo shermans, though.
Here's the whole tank. I held the tracks in place with white blu-tack. I added a weld seam and casting texture to the turret. The seams I made are still a bit too large, but I think they look okay.
This is the kit's .50 cal, with the PE handles, wire barrel changing handle and a scratch-built ammo box. The barrel changing handle is too big. I'll use thinner wire next time. The ammo box is made from styrene sheet, with ammo made out of stretched sprue and the ammo belt is tamiya masking tape.
Basic assembly is done, now I'll have to decide which decal option to use.
